Is anyone buying this when it comes out? I havne't seen this yet.

I saw this one in the theatre. I thought the first half(maybe 2/3) of the movie was great. Then it ravels into a mess in the end. It was very dissapointing for me.

Try it as a rental first.

Great rental movie! Very well might buy because Liz Hurley is so hot in the movie! And there were some very good comical moments throughout the movie.

I orderd this because its Spike...I need to cancel this if it's true. I refuse to pollute my DVD collection with a performance by Liz Hurley.

i was asking about bamboozled not bedazzled. obviously someone's a little bamboozled.

I really wanted to see this movie, but was unable to because of its severely limited theatrical release. I was somewhat pissed and I am debating whether or not I should buy it sight unseen. The disc itself seems somewhat impressive extras wise, but the dvdfile review said the viedo quality is not up to par.

Do you think the movie warrants a sight unseen purchase? Can you compare it to any other movies?

Just wanted to put my two cents in...

This is an incredible film! I saw it in the theatres in January, and I bought it yesterday, making sure to have it on the DAY it came out.

I can't remember the last time, if ever, a film has grabbed me like this. Certainly there are technically better films out there, and better performances (not that these actors aren't fantastic), and better... well, you get the idea. I don't think that this film can be measured on traditional cinematic formulae. (though it measures up decently there, too)

This is a statement, a teacher, a mirror, and conversation begging you to participate. (that sounded a little bit Madison Avenue-ish, but I mean it all in a profound way)

I was saying to someone earlier that there are many great films that I'm glad were made, because I love the art of cinema, and the entertainment as well... but this may be the only film I've seen in our times that I'm glad was made for the principle of the thing.


That said, I'd recommend renting it first. It's certainly not going to be everyone's cup of tea... but for me, it blew me away, and had me unable to lift myself from my seat even after the credits had rolled--it was that draining and powerful. In the theatre, the film elicited applause several times throughout... at home, where I just got done watching the film again, it has not lost an ounce of its ability to astound.

I was lucky enough to see this film in theaters. When I saw it, there was my party, and one other couple in the theater. I, being a honky, was almost embarassed to be laughing at what I was seeing on the screen, then I thought about it, and what its point was, and how Spike Leee made it, then I realized its ok.
I thought it was ok after I saw it, but over the next few days, I realized it was a great film. I really wish it had gotten the props it deserved [not movie props]. I wanted to rent this disc before buying it to make sure I wanted it still. Since i haven't rented it, I can't tell you how the disc it, but I bet its great.

sorry if this isn't the proper place to post this, but i saw this yesterday when i was picking up a bunch of higher-profile releases and i've got to say, based on the jacket art alone, i'm pretty intrigued.
the jacket art for this one is among the coolest i've ever seen on a dvd-any dvd- period.
i wish more studios would get away from the 'big star heads over the title' format and go back to illustrative design.

i'm gonna look up some reviews of the movie on MRQ before i decide to pop for it, and will definately be interested to see what people here say, although i doubt that it will generate anywhere near the attention a release like criterions THE ROCK did.

I just saw this movie last night. I went in to it with EXTREMELY high hopes, and was slightly dissapointed. Don't get me wrong, I liked it, and I thought it was a very good movie, I just expected too much out of it. I will also say, it is not for everyone's taste, definatley a renter first. The film itself was well done, though I thought it went a bit too far at times; there were a few things I would have changed...but what the hell do I know?

As for the DVD...this one is tricky. Spike Lee shot the movie with many different film stocks and cameras, therefore, quality varies. None of this is due to a poor tranfer though. I, personally, can't understand why Lee would do what he did at certain instances. Truthfully, I found it a bit distracting. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the film and the DVD has a fair amount of extras on it, and a fairly low price tag.

Definately a renter first!!!!

i spent a few minutes looking at the reviews for this and now it looks more like a renter.
some, like FILM THREAT, gave it enthusiatic raves, but the ones that panned it had some pretty valid and understandable problems w/ the storytelling. i think the general premise has promise, but i doubt from what i've read, that spike can gracefully pull it off w/out beating it into the ground or flying off in a melodramatic arc (based on my past experience w/ some of his films). still, i'm looking forward to renting it, and the commentary should be pretty meaty also.

This is a somewhat flawed, but powerful, thought-provoking film from Spike that makes Do the Right Thing look like Happy Days in comparison. It still haunts me. Our Dan H. wrote this excellent review: here.

Not a bad movie, but Damon Wayans prevented it from being much better. What the hell was up with his phoney accent that kept going from french to south african to nerdy white guy? Just his voice & acting were so out of place, it ruined much of the impact. It was like they let a character from a really bad SNL skit star in a good movie. What was Spike thinking? He had to be watching dailies. If he would have just talked & acted like a normal person it would have been fine. Or maybe Spike wanted the black person who came up with the ManTan show to be more like a white person.

I respectfully disagree. I think Wayans was pretty damn cool in this film. And the accent, while offputting, was meant to be that way. Pierre DeLacroix (born Peerless Doufin, remember) is absolutely disgusted with his roots as a black man. He has affected a new name, a new personality, and a new dialect. It's not that the actor has a bad accent, the character does. You can be sure that everyone in the movie who meets Pierre walks away asking each other "What the hell is up with his voice?"

If you read Wayans's ridiculous dialect as a symptom of part of what the film addresses as a whole (consider the rap group the Mau Maus, whose personalities and dialects are every bit as affected as Pierre's), I believe you'll find it intentional and pretty profound that he would rather sound ridiculous than be seen as a "normal black man." (which is another thing the film addresses... that there is no 'normal black man' or 'normal white man' etc, etc, etc)
