I took the liberty of perusing a few of the reviews and having seen the movie a few times myself, I thought this one was the best representation of the film:

I actually really enjoy this film.
The cinematography is beautiful & lush, the acting is very good and the feeling of watching this familys highs & lows over the years feels quite real. As soon as I heard there was going to be a re-release, I vowed to add this film to my collection.
Addian Quinn & Brad Pitt are in TOP form & very believable as brothers at odds in a familt torn apart by certain circumstances. (how's that for avoiding a spoiler?)

I just watched this last night, and really liked the film. It's got an epic quality, and the film never drags. IIRC there is a newer version (I watched the barebones version). Plus, there are some scenes that will give your sub a good workout too.

The SE is a definite improvement over the original. The picture detail is more in the SE as it's spread over 2 layers and has less compression. The audio is improved as it is encoded at the higher DD bit rate of 448kbs! That doesn't even included the featurettes, commentaries and 5.1 isolated score!
