Surprised by the quality of the releases by the Roan Group.

By quality I mean picture and sound quality. I recently bought the 2 disc set of Mr. Wong mystery movies from Buy.com for $34. Not a bad price for 6 complete films. The movies themselves starred Borris Karloff and were fun to watch for a fan of 30's mysteries. The thing that I was impressed by was the picture and sound quality. I was expecting Mandacy, but the quality was as good as some Criterion releases. The films did not have extensive digital restoration, but the transfers were very good and were definitely taken from good quality materials. There were some small defects as is usual with 60 year old movies, but no major splices, tears, hair, or any other major distraction. The look beats anything I have seen from Mandacy, Focus, Laserlight, or any of the other small DVD companies. If anyone is buying DVDs in the future produced by the Roan Group I would expect a good to very good picture and sound.

I find Roan Group's DVD tranfer qualitiy to be a mixed bag. I have their White Zombie & it's the best transfer I've ever seen of the film. The Anthony Mann film noir collection isn't bad, but when & if Kino releases DVD transfers of the same films, He Walked by Night, Raw Deal, etc., I think they'll be better since their video tape tranfers were digitally remastered. Also Image's transfer of DOA is better than Roans. However, you can't beat the price of the Anthony Mann collection. Cheers, Tony Block

My one and only Roan Group purchase was Rage at Dawn. It says restored on the Dvd case. All I know is the trailer looks okay but the film looks like crap compared to the trailer. While its not the worst thing I have seen on Dvd (Death Rides A Horse is 1st)it would be 2nd worst. I love Delta/Laserlights and have quite a collection of them for about 4.50 per title and enjoy them very much for the price.
