What's the commentry track on the Ninth Gate like? Is it Polanski himself, or with anyone else? I haven't seen the film yet and may buy the DVD if it's got a good commentry. Please help.

The Director of Photography Darius Khondji (he also did Seven, Stealing Beauty, Alien Resurrection, Delicatessen, etc) did a live interview once in London and he was really good so just wondering if he's on the track at all.

My copy arrived in the mail today, unfortunately going out of town for the weekend so won't see it till Sun night. However, there is a review just posted today at mondo-digital.com that discusses the commentary track. They also discuss reg 2 releases. Right below the Ninth Gate review is one for reg 2 copy of Cul-de-Sac. Cheers, Tony block

I listened to a small portion of the track when I rented this movie. It is done with Polanski by himself and is very boring. In the parts I listened to he was rambling on in his hard-to-understand accent about how great the actors were and crap like that. It seemed very uninformative.

My very tiny, but ever-growing DVD list.

For me, one of the values in hearing the track the entire way through is getting a small glimmer of the personality of the great director, Roman Polanski. Polanski tells us that he recorded the commentary in his office in France while smoking a cigar. Polanski also says that he's a big fan of the DVD format.

It's great and so is the film. One of the best even if it's just to listen to Polanski speak. But it's informative too.

I'd love to hear more commentaries by Polanski but (judging from a few of his comments on this track) I'm not sure if he'd want to go through his entire body of work. But who knows? A Rosemary's Baby running commentary wouldn't be too shabby. Since a disk for Chinatown has already been produced, we're probably not gonna get one from that film. Either way, I'm happy that he did one.
