I thought Dogma sucked. Kevin Smith's character dialogue is all the same. None of the characters really have personalities. Each of his characters are really the same person (they're all Kevin Smith on a soap box.)
His last two films were much too preachy, although "Chasing Amy" is his most polished work. His movies are shallow and nowhere as near as smart as they try to be. (Well, clerks was the "smartest" but with its success Smith started to overrate himself. The rest of his movies have lost the honesty that clerks had.)
Dogma was Smith's worst movie. Although it had a good cast, it still had too many characters, and was poorly written. IF it hadn't been for the Salma Hayek eye candy this movie would have been totally unwatchable. (Though The Silent Bob-smith and Jay characters did make me laugh several times and also help save the movie.)
Matt Damon does a good job with Smith's dialogue though. However, Chris Rock's standup delivery, and Smiths sense of humor don't gel very well.
Clerks was his best and Chasing Amy was a strong effort. Mallrats was funny, but a little pointless.

I consider myself a pretty big Kevin Smith fan, and I have been since I first saw Clerks almost 5 years ago. Have Kevin's last two flicks been a little preachy? I'd say yeah but definitely not on the level of your typical Oliver Stone or Spike Lee film (I happen to love both of those guy's work too). Anyway, here's how I rank Smith's efforts.
1) Dogma
2) Chasing Amy
3) Clerks
4) Mallrats
I also like how Kevin keeps in touch with his fans through his website www.viewaskew.com and his numerous appearances at colleges and various other places. I also check www.newsaskew.com on a daily basis.

I'd have to say that Dogma is my least favorite Kevin Smith film, and you should really love his other films if you liked Dogma so much. Clerks is my favorite, with Chasing Amy and Mallrats tied.

Is Night Porter very good? I was noticing it in the Criterion catalogue, and I thought "This one looks interesting, kind of like a less bizzare predecessor to Blue Velvet" but then I read the reviews and it said "nothing but softcore porn, made even more astonishing by the fact that it was directed by a woman." Still, I figured that it couldn't be all bad, since it was made into a Criterion disc (well, OK, they did Armageddon, but other than that they seem to make good choices...) that it would have to have some good qualities. Is it worth getting?

I just watched my Chasing Amy Criterion, and I have to say that I thought this was a much better movie than Dogma, which I loved. Chasing Amy, while not as funny as Dogma, did have some amusing lines. However, I would have to say it was more drama than comedy. In any event, Chasing Amy had a lot more depth to the movie and the characters than Dogma. So, I would have to rate them as follows so far:
Chasing Amy: A
Dogma: A-/B+
Mallrats: D
Clerks: Haven't seen it yet.
