Is the Basic Instinct DVD any good?
Also, a long time ago, I heard that someone, I think Critterion, would be puting out a special edition which included the steamier director's cut. Anyone know anything about this?

I don't recall anything about Criterion doing it...I believe Artisan was the one who was going to do it...haven't heard any news of it lately since they are probably concentrating their efforts on T2:SE

Just because Criterion has put out a couple of Micheal Bay movies doesn't mean that they're going to release every piece of garbage that comes along.

I got Basic Instinct coming from Artisan.... someday.
Is that a reason Artisan had Basic Instinct and T2 on the free list? To make room for the SE's that will be replacing the standard?

There is a Special Edition laser disk (Not by Criterion) that has a commentary track and the extra footage added in.
Also, a Director's Cut VHS tape has the extra footage and interviews with the stars and director at the end of the tape.
The extra footage is more graphic violence rather than graphic sex.
I don't know if a SE DVD will come out?

To address comments by EBChamorro,
Since I have the Pioneer Special Edition laserdisc, I would despute that only more violence is added. It's much more graphic sexually when Mike Douglas is going down on Sharon (and Verhoeven explains exactly how in the commentary) and the rough sex with Tripplehorn is much more graphic. imdb backs me up: http://us.imdb.com/AlternateVersions?0103772
I would say you get the regular DVD for free with one or Aritisans many offers, fine. Just don't pay for this lame DVD.
