Review for Deliverance
#1
Deliverance, the tale of a canoeing trip that takes a wrong turn. Based in Georgia, it gives us a look into the beautiful landscapes in the thick of the deep South. The story is suspenseful and introspective. It's a very good movie, and also lets you see where Quentin Tarantino got an idea or two, from.
The Disc...
Well first thing I noticed is that it's two sided. One side has widescreen 2.35, the other has pan and scan, much like the Austin Powers disc. I figured in this day and age, RDSL discs were used for these kinds of things. Oh well... The widescreen is anamorphic, but I just have a 4:3 tv... Well the transfer is good and bad. What's good: there are hardly any dust spots and the like, very clean. Bad, it seemed really soft a lot of the time, especially during wide shots of the river. Also, there is some serious artificial edge enhancement, especially of a tree at night. I didn't notice any pixelizing or compression artifacts. This was for the 2.35 side, I didn't look at the other side. But all in all, for a movie this old it holds up visually speaking.
This movie sports a robust DD 5.1 mix. There's good seperation and good use of the back speakers for ambience.
Extras, a trailer (don't watch it if you haven't seen the movie, it gives away a lot) production notes, and a documentory that isn't too bad.
Well considering the discount price of the film, and its good condition overall as a transfer, its definitely worth a look. I give it 8/10
Cheers

DVD Talk Limited Edition
I saw this as a teen in the theater and loved seeing it again. Not sure if it Anamorphic or not but it is widescreen. I guess its more famous for the dueling banjo scene and the Ned Beatty rape scene. For the price its a good Dvd.

Great flick when I first saw it in the theatres years ago...still a great flick. True, the video leaves something to be desired in a few spots, but overall it stands the test of time. I thoroughly enjoyed taking a trip back in time....:-)
