What the hell was that? Sure it had a few laughs in the beginning of the movie, but it went flat and became very boring. I truely despised that Oz guy's plot with all the choir crap. The features don't help this one. What a letdown.

I agree with you. So many people told me how funny this film was...so I rented it and was very dissapointed. It reminded me of some bad 1980s teen comedy. The funniest part to me was Alyson Hannigan as the band camp geek and her flute story.

I only laughed once during "American Pie" (the "What's my name?" part). Excellent DVD, but the movie bored me.

You guys must be watching it with the wrong crowd - this is a movie you have to see with a group of people. Have a bunch of people over, order some pizza, open some beers and watch American Pie. It is a crowd film because it relies on it's shock value, which is only really effective the first time you see it and with a bunch of friends.

C'mon Heather - you didn't like any of the absolutely hilarious Eugene Levy scenes?

Again, though, a weak film for multiple or small viewings.

EDIT : Spelling - what else?

I can't believe people found this boring. Then again, I saw it in the theatre, people were laughing so hard I missed some of the dialogue in the movie. I thought it was hilarious, but it definately loses replay value as some of the jokes use "shock value".

Can I ask the people that didnt like it what kind of comedies 'busted their gut'? What movies made you almost wet your pants? It would give me a better idea of what kind of sense of humor is needed to enjoy this movie.

"Election" was the funniest 1999 movie I've seen, so that is the type of movie that busts my gut. "A Fish Called Wanda" and "Animal House" are two post-classic era films that I think are hilarious. (Note: I haven't seen "Being John Malkovich.") If I wanted to watch a bunch of inept guys try to lose their virginity I'd spend the afternoon with some of my friends.

hmmm. ok. that gives me a better idea. Personally I think both Election and Animal House are overrated... while I enjoyed both movies, I found them only mildy funny. There were a few scenes in Election that I thought were pretty hysterical.

And the humor in American Pie was rarely (if ever?) part of the pursuit.

for the record, two of the funniest movies I've ever seen are Planes Train & Automobiles and Monty Python and the Holy Grail. But, thats just my taste.

Well this topic is slowly deteriorating into a best comedy one. For that, I nominate The Blues Brothers. However, along the American Pie review, I found this movie to be good, but maybe not as funny as others. Both it and Something About Mary are movies I find funny, but not as funny as the general public does. Nonetheless, I did enjoy American Pie and found it to be a solid comedy. Of course if you don't like that kind of humor you should stay away.

I was unable to enjoy Election as I saw it in the theater with my MOM! If you've seen the movie you can probably imagine that there were a few uncomfortable moments.

I thought American Pie was overrated; it was okay but not outstanding. And probably the only reason it was okay is the solid character buildup. It just was not terribly funny IMO. The jokes were either not that funny in themselves or you could see them coming. Like the pie scene....of course that was kind of ruined from everyone knowing about it ahead of time anyway, but really the only thing that funny about the scene to me was what Eugene Levy says at the end of it, "We'll tell her we ate it".

I think the popularity of this movie mainly stems from almost total lack of good movies in this genre period.

I would prefer something like a Farelly Bros comedy; like in TSAM they are just more skilled in setting up the jokes and everything is more off-the-wall and unexpected. How about Booty Call? I thought that one was a riot. Stupid, but very funny. Maybe I'm just getting older and teen comedies don't do much for me.

Hmmm... I'd say that Election was one of the funniest films I saw last year. Of course, I also love dark humor, found in abundance in Happiness and Welcome to the Dollhouse.

AP was overrated, IMO, and characteristic of the juvenile shock humor foisted off on us by such films as South Park: B,L&U.

Of course, I also lose my cookie when watching so-bad-they're good pieces like Man's Best Friend and Anaconda.

Well, I liked American Pie. It could have taken a dark turn, but the makers stayed on course. I loved the dead-on Nicholas Cage impersonation by that kid who could not go to the potty at school.

I thought American Pie was great... one of the few movies I actually saw in the theatre twice. I don't see how someone can say it is unfunny compared to Election, which I found a total bore and don't believe I laughed once (please, point out some funny scenes, I don't remember a one).

I bought American Pie on a recommendation.

Perhaps the movie was marketed too well - I was dissapointed.

I thought American Pie was watchable, but not great. Much better to watch in a theater than on video--the funniest parts were all with Eugene Levy, like when he says "safer than a tube sock".

Anyways, my favorite comedies are Monty Python movies (Life of Brian, Meaning of Life, Holy Grail), A Fish Called Wanda and This Is Spinal Tap.

I agree, Eugene Levy was probably the best part. Although the "Whats my name" was the only joke that I didn't see coming, and therefore made me laugh.

That is what the movie so lame. You could just see the jokes coming from a million miles away. Okay there is a character that hates to go to the bathroom at school. Wonder what will happen to him?

I love people like Levy. I really wish we could get SCTV onto DVDs like the Python shows...

Well for the record I want to say I LOVE THIS MOVIE. I've watched it at least 5 times, I watched it alone the first 2 times, took it to my friends house and he and his wife both died laughing. What are the age groups of the people who hated this movie? For the record I'm 27.

And this one time in band camp....

Heather --- Excellent DVD but the movie bored me. Mind explaining that?

I will say I enjoyed American Pie. Many laughs from the sock, to the guy taking a $hit at school, to the c%m/beer part, to the end where the boy set a record....2 nuts in what, 10 seconds, geeezzzzz!

I was dissappointed with the deleted scenes. Need a DVD-rom drive to see them, that's bs! ...except for the part where the guy humped the pie on the table. he was desperate!!

21 here!

Jonathan

It means that the DVD had excellent audio/visual/supplementary feature quality but I thought the movie itself was boring.

I enjoyed this movie immensely....true, it was sophomoric at times and maybe it's a "male" thing, but I thought it was hilarious and brought back thoughts of my own teenage years. Okay, maybe the girls at my high school weren't quite as good looking, but it brought back many fond memories.

I enjoyed this film, but I do agree it would have been even better at the movie theater with a crowd. The laughter would've been contagious in a theater setting.

The next time I watch this movie will be when I have the guys over!!!
