OK, I don't want to incite a riot here - I had the same dilemma with SPR. I ended up going with the SE DD5.1 edition because I was much more interested in the special features. That being said, I've never seen Out of Sight - I don't listen to directors commentaries usually and this one is supposed to be particularly bad.

From someone who has it, would you buy the same format again or get the other? Is the DTS that much better or so the special features outweigh DTS??

Thanks.

Personally I would recommend renting it first. I heard all sorts of good things about this movie then I saw it Since you didn't really ask for a review I won't bother with details, I just wanted to add a recommendation to blow the $3-$5 before shelling out $15-$20, you might be glad you did

The best DVD of 1999! The best movie of 1998! I love it! I love Steven Soderbergh! Can't get enough of the funny commentary and of course the awesome movie! Just buy it! Use a 10 off 25 CITIBANK5 coupon and pick it up a Reel for about 17.00. It's worth paying 50.00 for it! I can't really evaluate the DTS version because I don't have a big sound system or anyhting. But I can say that the features in the SE are incredible! The Transfer is one of the best I've ever seen! I love this movie! Please do yourself a favor and just buy the movie! Please.

P.S. Soderbergh's other movie, the best of 1999 might I add, The Limey, is now up for a March Release on Reel. Already pre-ordered it. Can't wait! Yippee! (Can you feel my enthusiasm toward Sorderbergh?)

Get the DTS. Even if you can't hear a difference, it just sounds cool. DTS...

This movie's not a sonic showcase, it's dialogue-driven, so DTS wouldn't make that much of a difference. And most of the special features on the DD5.1 version are very good: the deleted scenes are great, and so is the commentary IMO (in fact, this is the first time I've heard anyone say it's bad). Only the "documentary" is a waste. The sound on the DD5.1 version is also very good for the few scenes that need it.

Bottom-line: Go for the SE.

Thanks Gang! I'm going for the SE. I guess I never thought that the movie wouldn't be one of those that really benefited from DTS. I'm a big fan Get Shorty and Pulp Fiction so I'm sure that I'll enjoy this. I'll probably use some freeride GC's and a CDNOW coupon and try and get it for just a couple of bucks.

I vote for the extras, too! I rented this title when it came out, and want it in my collection for sure!

I think the commentary is wonderful, by the way--full of reasons behind this-or-that screenplay or editing decision... Maybe too technical for some? I dunno... The deleted scenes are terrific for this film!

The commentary is definately worth listening to. And before you look at the deleted scenes since they give some background on them.

And if you can find the Limey in a theater,
definately go. It builds on some of the techniques in Out of Sight and there is a reference to George Clooney.

And Salon recently had a good interview with Soderbergh

I watched my DD version, listened to the commentary and looked over the deleted scenes and then auctioned it off. Movies like these tend to hold my attention the first time through and usually don't have alot of replay value for me. But that's just me. The commentary is worth listening to, though it can devolve into a lovefest between the director and the screenwriter.

Patman: You really did that? This disc has high replay value, IMO. I've watched it 3 times with friends who've never seen it, and afterward they raved about how cool it was. I consider it my public duty to own this disc and spread its joy to others!
