I've had a chance to take a look at Miramax's special edition of "Everest" and Warner's "Deep Blue Sea" so far today and one by one:
(If you want to read my full reviews of these titles, go to my website: A Guide To Current DVD
"Everest": Yes, another outrageous $39.99 price tag, especially painful on a movie that's 45 minutes long. But the extras are actually quite pleasing on this release. There is a 3D interactive map of the route that the climbers took, a 37 minute documentary and a 36 minute interview with one of the climbers who was injured on the climb, as well as a couple of deleted scenes and video journals. While the video quality is passable, the audio quality is excellent, with a very strong score.
"Deep Blue Sea": One of my favorite movies of the year gets a very good DVD from Warner: there's a couple of decent documentaries, a very fun and interesting commentary from Renny Harlin and, for part of the commentary, Samuel L. Jackson. Although Warner has almost always done a very good job on image quality, they've taken it one step further here with an outstanding transfer. Audio quality is just as strong. Very highly recommended!
"Inspector Gadget": Although I haven't written a full review yet, I do like what I see so far. I hate to compliment Disney, but this is one of the very best non-anamorphic transfers I've ever seen, with outstanding colors. Sound is also excellent.
I'll also be taking a look at the "Shakespeare In Love":SE later this week.
