You haven't proved that most people didn't like Election; you only showed that most people didn't see it.

I saw Election in the theater with my son. My son thought it was very good, I thought it was a waste. I don't dislike many movies but Election just agravated me.

As it turns out we have a democratic house here and since my wife and others did not see Election we bought the DVD. They watched it last night. I took advantage of the time and went to bed, a much better use of time in my opinion. I will poll them when they wake up and post their opinions here later.

Heather,

Are you serious? Do you truly believe that a teacher "seducing" a student to run for President, so a student he thinks would be a bad president would have some competition, is the same as a teacher seducing a student for sex?

No, Mike, it was an attempt at figurative speaking. My point was that they wooed Paul and Tracy in almost identical matters, for different purposes of course. They had both observed the two students in their school environment, and ultimatey took advantage of them with what knowledge they'd gained from that. I think it's disgusting that teachers would do that (take advantage of any student), regardless of in what matter they're taking advantage of them. But I never said or meant to imply that one was not worse than the other.

My copy finally came in yesterday, so I watched it for the first time last night. I was very impressed. This is a smart and biting comedy with good performances from the entire cast. Although it`s been almost 20 years since I was in high school, I do remember people just like Flick. Obviously the film is exaggerated for comedy purposes, but I think it`s closer to reality than some might think. The most shocking thing is that "Election" comes from MTV Productions. Quality and MTV are two things that never go together.

I'm firmly entrenched in the "Election was great" camp. I saw it in the theater with very high expectations and had them exceeded. I laughed out loud many times. One thing that I think was very brave about this movie, considering the fact that it was funded by MTV and set in high school, is that there seemed to be no attempt to pander to the PG-13 crowd. Granted, vulgarity for vulgarity's sake is unnecessary, but sometimes only a well-placed "fuck" will do. I'm curious, is this issue discussed at all in the commentary?
I really find it interesting where everyone's sympathies are lying. Although he did some reprehensible things, I more often sympathized with Mr. M. I suppose this is because in high school I loathed people like Tracy. Also, I supppose I felt bad that he had carved out such a pathetic existence for himself. Tracy, on the other hand, with the exception of one brief moment with her mother after the election, inspired no sympathy in me whatsoever. I came out of this film thinking she was pure evil. Since she is able to achieve so much, I find her much more frightening than her cinematic cousin in To Die For.
Overall, great film. I highly recommend it.

I din't care for this movie either. I rented it the other day and was not impressed. If you want a dark satire of high school life watch Heathers.
