When anyone mentions great composers, Mozart and Beethoven are invariably on the list. Amadeus was an incredible piece of film making, and the critics seemed to agree. Immortal Beloved on the other hand, was not so universally praised, but I think still an excellent film.
The film is a moving drama with a superb cast. Gary Oldman steals the show, and the 5.1 soundtrack is incredible. The transfer and soundtrack is where this DVD has Amadeus beat. This movie may be a bit more melodramatic, and have an MTV "music video" feel, as many said the Beethoven pieces were overplayed. I'd have to agree as the music rarely lets you take a breath, but it also propels the story forward and conveys each scenes emotions quite well.
The transfer is great, and anamorphic to boot. The 5.1 remastered soundtrack is phenomenal. Plenty of extras including a making of documentary, a featurette, info, and trailers. It's time to throw that old laserdisc out and upgrade to the DVD.
IMHO
