I have never seen the movie so I'm just hesitating to pre-order a copy. What would you advise me about buying this movie? Is it suitable enough for whole family?

Thanks in Advance with

Young

I believe a rent-first before you buy, if you
haven't seen it yet.

Or catch it at the bargain shows.

Regarding this film, there is really no way of figuring out who will like this and who will not. I think you should rent it first.

DEFINITELY rent it first. I didn't hate the movie but there's no way I'd buy it. I like the freshness of the way it was done re: a few students doing a documentary then seeing what they recorded, but the movie wasn't scary and most of what kept me going was wondering how exactly it would end. Now that I know that, there's no way I'd want to see it again. This movie got way too much hype.

Well, some people thought it was very frightening, but the jerky hand-held cam movements made me physically ill. It was very original, but the ending was a bit disappointing. It is already the most-parodied movie of all time, though, and what better compliment can there be?

As far as a family show, be aware that the language in this film is extremely rough with countless four-letter words. The gore and violence level is almost non-existent, but my kids won't be seeing it for a few years, at least with my permission.

BWP was the most over-hyped disappointment I've seen in years. I've had scarier fast food meals (and they didn't take an hour-and-a-half to finish, either).

Rent it first...if only to satisfy your curiosity.

It might scare you once. Definitely not a purchasing movie. Unless you get it for $5 I wouldn't buy it. This movie was more hyped than Star Wars Episode 1!

I agree wholeheartedly with DarrylEng.

The movie stank up the joint. It's about as scary as a mosh pit at the Lilith Fair. The characters were beyond annoying and had vocabularies consisting of five words.

Now that would be scarry!

As far as the shakey-cam video goes, all I can say is it didn't hold a candle to my mother in-law's home video work. That'll make a sailor sea-sick.

As other's have said: rent before buy. It's one of those pictures where passions run deep but divided.

WynsWrld98 put it very well. It's bound to be a cult classic, but not for everyone. Definitely rent before you buy.

Even if you don't like it, I believe that it would be worth owning. It made history by making over $100 Million with a $30,000 budget. It's going to start a trend, good or bad, and if you're a movie lover, it'd be a good addition to your collection.

ce_wymore, I don't think it's going to start a trend. I also don't think it started anything. If you're talking about low budget films making big bucks, don't forget Rocky, Clerks, and Waterworld. Low budget movies have been around for a long time, not just Blair Witch (which stunk), Blair Witch was just so Hyped that everyone had to see it. I bet the audience is 50/50 on it now. Half thought it stunk half thought it was the scariest thing ever. I bet if Rocky were rereleased now it would break the 100 million mark. Hell, I bet it has sold over 100 million copies.

If you're talking about Blair Witch starting a documentary type movie movement then I hope you're wrong. I like movies with actors, and unrealistic looking chicks with Barbie porportioned bodies fast cars and guns and a guy that makes every one laugh! Not wet shoes and weird looking kids...

The most scary movie ever ? Bull....

This movies is the best marketing effort of the century !!
It didn't work that well outside the US too (maybe european are more marketing proof ;-)

Anyway, I think that you should rent it first. You will either love it, like it or hate it. I liked the end of it but pretty bored during the whole movie.

I say rent the movie first. I found that this movie made almost arrive to the point of being physically ill. This was because it was very intense... and frightening. Some people thought it was cheap.. others.. too realistic. I think this is one of those titles where you have to see it first before buying... or risk having a title that you may not wish to have. I don't wish to buy it myself.. just because the film left me in a rather frightened state.

Definitely rent it - you'll either love it or really hate it. Fans of low budget art-house horror will most likely love it; elsewise, you may or may not like it, it strongly depends.

I like it, and most of my friends do, but we all tend to like the art-house stuff, and we saw it before the bulk of the hype. (:

As a DVD it will be a better "feature", since it includes the Sci-fi documentary and extras that will help give the background for the movie. The movie lacked a little in telling people what was going on (if you didn't pay close attention to the beginning).

I saw it and really liked it. I'm buying it. I think it's a hard film to recommend because people perceive it so differently. I think it's the most original film I've seen since Pulp Fiction. Others were bored by it. Who knows. I'd say rent it and if you do like it, you can probably pick up a copy in the exchange forum from someone who regretted purchasing it.

Poorboy,
Waterworld was one of the priciest films ever. It costs well over $130 million to make and got tons of bad publicity before it came out just because of it's huge cost. I personally liked the movie so don't get me wrong. It's not in any way a low budget film though.

Karma,

I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that the "Waterworld" comment was that literary element known as sarcasm.

But while, I'm here, I liked and disliked TBWP. Those that say it's the worst movie ever are just looking to go against the "pop" crowd, and those who say it's the greatest movie of the year need to hurry to the nearest theater to see some more movies. It's an interesting movie with a unique concept. It's freaky but not scary, so if you're looking for a fright-fest, you'll be disappointed.

If you're not really into movies and want to purchase something you'll watch over and over again, I'd say rent Blair Witch, and then make a decision. However, if you're any type of movie fanatic or really into DVDs, you might as well just buy it. Good or bad, TBWP is a unique achievement, and (with the features) will make an excellent addition to a DVD library.

das

Hmmm...my thoughts on Blair WItch.

LOVED the idea behind it. S'far as was it scary? IMHO, HELL no. It creeped me out a little..I'll grant it that. I remember, many a year ago (All right, maybe 10 years ago) going out looking for the local legends). We never saw anything...tho, I remember a point where me and 3 friends were walking and could barely see each other.

I was one of those hit by the shaky cam. Went to work after seeing it, got sick, went home. Saw it a second time with some friends who hadn't seen it yet, and was a >< bit better. Course, knowing when to close my eyes at the shaky cam helped.

Will I get it on DVD? Probably. "Curse of the Blair Witch" was a neat extra. As I said, the background for the story was fab. It's a testament that there are people out there that STILL BELIEVE that this actually happened..or, barring that, that there really is a Blair Witch. I'm not a freak on it, but I do like good fiction.

Anyways, just my .11 cents.

Well, I liked TBWP myself. But there's been a lot of ink on that one. I'd like to throw my endorsement out there for "The Last Broadcast". Now, I don't know who has seen this one (it made history as the first digitally projected movie and there are eerie parallels between in and blair), but I caught it last Friday at the very beginning of its last week in an American theater at the County in Doylestown, PA (where it made its premiere a year ago).

The filmmakers say that there will be a DVD release late November/early December and that it will have a director's commentary track, a history of the Jersey Devil and some behind the scenes info. See this movie, it is a more intellectual movie than Blair Witch, and more Hitchcockian than Blair Witch's more straightforward horror flick.

I'll try to get more details on this disc and post 'em.

JoeC...who was won over by the film and the very nice filmmmakers themselves.
