For those who saw and liked it at the theaters and those who liked Seven (same writer), but never have seen it.. I would highly recommend getting a hold of a copy (pre-order)...
For those of you who haven't yet seen it, I may slightly warn you... A very dark (murder/porn says it all) story... I liked it and Nicolas Cage was great...

It comes with a great anamorphic video transfer (very crisp and clear) as well as an excellent DD5.1 track... Special features of note include a director's commentary (Schumacher) and about a 15 minute making of featurette...

Thanks for the review Morpheus. 8MM sure did take a critical pounding, but it looks like it's worth at least a rental on DVD...

Yeah . . . I always have a hard time turning down a Columbia/Tri-Star DVD, especially at a pre-order price of $11 w/ coupon!!! Columbia/Tri-Star consistently pumps out the best looking and sounding DVDs and this one seems to continue that trend.

Even with the mixed reviews, I am almost sure I'll enjoy this one, since I loved "Se7en".

Hey sonic . . .

I'm not sure if that coupon's new or old. I know that Reel had a similar coupon before . . . starting with the word VISACLICK . . . anyways, there's so many out there, I've lost track.

Man, it seems like you are just snatching up those DVDs lately!!! . . . YEAH!!! . . . ROCK ON!!!

As for "Halloween" . . . already pre-ordered it. Retail??? . . . what's that???

Believe it or not, I don't think I've ever seen "Dark Crystal". You have my interest since it's a Columbia/Tri-Star release. Can you tell me more about it? Thanks . . .

Needlz..Sorry but i never seen it. But, did you know that it's a Columbia Special Edition? It's loaded! This movie is known for it's gorgeous scenery and story. It reminds me of the video game Zelda, because it's fantasy like, i think the first in it's kind on dvd! Universal's legend i'm hoping for, and the movie Willow. Also Labyrinth from Columbia is coming out soon and is also a Special Edition! I preordered Dark Crystal from dvdexpress..but honestly..i dont mind paying the $16 for it. Is just that since i have a $5 reel coupon to use, i figure i could get Dark Crystal cheaper from Reel. But who knows if Reel will soon get it, and who knows if they will have dvdexpress's $14.99 price tag? Reel...get this one!

sonic . . .

A Columbia/Tri-Star special edition!!! . . . that's all I needed to know. I'll be looking around to see if I can get a good deal on this one.

Hey . . . we seem to have similar tastes in movies and think alike when we are pre-ordering.

By the way, have you seen "Go"? It's another Columbia/Tri-Star release and I was thinking about pre-ordering this one. Most of the opinions I've read in this forum have been positive, but I'm still debating on this one.

Just watched my "8mm" for the first time tonight. Not a bad film, but definately far from a great film. Not nearly as disturbing as some people have said. A nice DVD though.

I saw 8mm in the theaters and it was on my wanted list until I preordered from 800.com. I got it today and listened to the commentary track. I found Joel Schumaker's commentary very intelligent. While he seemed to stray off-topic and talking too long about the same story, it was very interesting. I just read the review above (currentfilm.com) and have to agree with the commmentary review. It give a great insight on the cuts included in this film - deleting a whole storyline and cuts for the R rating. The only thing that I found missing from this disc is the aforementioned deleted cut scenes. He says that there are copies and they would have been great. I'm looking forward to getting another Schumaker disc with a commentary on it because he sounded (and most certainly is) very intelligent and brought up many good points about morals and other insights into society. Even if you didn't like this film, it is worth the rent for the audio commentary.

Also, just as a side note, I noticed that Schumaker talked constantly. I have listened to other films where the director will make an occasional comment and then you can watch some of the film, but Schumaker had so much to say and he made good points with everything he brought up. One of the best commentaries I have heard yet.

I just finished watching this one and thoroughly enjoyed it. I also feel it wasn't as disturbing as people made out to be. I was more disturbed walking out of the theater after "Se7en".

As for the quality, Columbia/Tri-Star does it again!!! . . . a great anamorphic transfer and DD 5.1. It's also nice to know that the Schumacher commentary is a good one.

I was a bit hesitant pre-ordering this one, but now I'm sure glad I did.

I agree with most. I wasn't nearly as disturbed watching this movie as I was watching Happiness. I was expecting some hard-core material and felt it was a little sugar coated, and for good reasons?

One of the things that bothered me the most about this film was the relationship of Nic Cage and his on-screen wife. I felt that was a relationship which could have been re-written. I thought the actress was horrible and really distracted me from the movie.

I also wished that the charactor Nic played had some past of sorts. It seems that the director was taking Nic's charactor(Tom Wells?? I havent seen it since Friday night), from good boy to disturbed boy. I never really felt like he crossed any moral line. In fact what I thought was kinda stupid was when he first viewed the "8mm" film. He was so bothered by it. But, he is a private eye who see's lots of different stuff. Why should that bother him so much? I mean, not to sound de-sensitized or anything, but it seems like maybe in his previous career he was a policeman, cia, fbi? Its not like that was his first murder.

Anyway, its late and I am just rambling. I felt it is worth a rental. I own it and I am happy...

I watched 8mm last night and was very disappointed with the film. Lack of substance and anything to really keep me interested. Seven is a far superior movie, can't wait for the upcoming SE!

I rented 8mm a couple days ago and was semi-disappointed, although I wasn't expecting a whole lot given the bad reviews. But I agree with most of the above--it wasn't very disturbing at all, but Seven stuck with me for weeks. The DVD video and sound quality on 8mm are great, but I wouldn't care to own it. Standard thriller. I've seen better TV episodes.

On the other hand, since someone brought it up already, "GO!" is a great movie. I'm really looking forward to that DVD (comes out in about a month)--includes like 11 deleted scenes, 3 or 4 music videos, etc. But it's worth it for the movie alone. Great flick! Very original, very energetic and fast-paced (unlike 8mm which was very slow in parts), interesting characters. You guys should check it out.

I thought the movie was OK overall. What I liked most about the movie was its attempt to show the way unimaginable things can affect a normal person. The scene where Cage says save me (if you've seen the movie I think you will understand, I don't want to spoil it for anyone that hasn't seen it) to his wife moved me and caused me to reflect on how lucky I am to be married to a woman that would always be there for me.

All in all I recomend the movie even if it's not perfect.

PS I agree the trasfer to DVD is great. It seems to be difficult to get good tranfers on movies with a lot of dark scenes but they did an excellent job on this one

I personally think that 8mm was horrible. I've seen Seven, and its a good movie. Its intelligent. It was done well. 8mm starts off good, but ends very disappointingly which ruins the whole movie. I would NOT recommend buying this.. rent it first if you havent seen it.. It's NOT like Seven.

remember.. Kevin Williamson wrote both Scream and I know What you Did Last Summer. Scream rules IKWYDLS sucked!
