If you're a Paul Newman fan, I'd say it's worth seeing. It's a very powerful film and the acting by Newman and others in the cast is great. It's kind of a downer, but it shouldn't discourage you from seeing it. It's the kind of role Newman does well --- the rebel who won't conform (no matter what the consequences).
As far as owning the disc, I guess it depends on how you're building your collection. I borrowed the disc from a co-worker and enjoyed it, but everyone has a budget for their collection, and I felt there are other titles that I haven't seen or may want to own more than this.
But then again, if you can find a bargain or use a coupon, why not?
I am facing this choice with other Newman films I haven't seen (Winning and Twilight).

Darkelf,
I'm glad you asked. Unfortunately, I have never seen Cool Hand Luke, so I can't make specific comparisons. Let's try making a judgement in the following manner:
Does Cool Hand Luke present the rich characterizations that can be found in Armageddon?
Does Cool Hand Luke provide the viewer with a tight, gut wrenching, emotional rollercoaster of a plot the way Armageddon does?
Does Cool Hand Luke make a social statement like Armageddon?
Not having seen Cool Hand Luke, I cannot answer these questions. But I feel that it is unlikely that CHL could possibly approach the glory both in entertainment value and emotional impact that the viewer always receives when watching Armageddon.
Mind you, Cool Hand Luke could well be fine entertainment. There are many great movies out there. Few if any can approach Armageddon, but they are still worth watching nonetheless. Don't let the fact that they aren't as good as Armageddon stop you from watching them. I mean really folks, comparing a movie to Armageddon is setting the bar to an almost impossibly high standard.
By the way, I'm not making up that stuff about "Sweatiest movie ever made". I really did see that on Cheers.

Joonwoo,
Cool Hand Luke is definately worth owning. Every character is great and yes, they are as richly developed as those is Armageddon. Paul Newman's and George Kennedy'd roles are just a couple that you will remember for the rest of your life. I'm sorry, but Armageddon is nowhere near the greatest movie of all time. I hope to God that you are being sarcastic. Anyway, that is not the topic here so I won't go on.
