Re: "Abigail" Reviews/Discussion - 2024 Horror Challenge
It was OK. I'm not sure I would fully call it a comedy. It was entertaining enough, though. They sure leaned into the whole ballerina thing. That first scene of her attacking as dance was a lot of fun, but I did tire of it a bit as the movie went.
I think I would have preferred if the movie were just the Abigail plot. She either eats everyone or dies trying. The double and triple cross thing just felt tacked on. It's like they really wanted to find a way to give the audience permission to root for Abigail. I guess one could see it as setting up the sequel, too. I liked the movie enough that I would check out a sequel. |

Re: "Abigail" Reviews/Discussion - 2024 Horror Challenge
I thought this was one of the best vampire movies I have seen in some time. It was perfectly cast, and everyone was excellent in their roles. Good comic timing and some really funny lines and reactions. A decent amount of gore without being overly gross and I enjoyed all the fun nods to vampire lore.
The little girl was fantastic in this, but I don't see how they could do a sequel with her since she will age out of the role. She was the perfect mix of innocence and menace. I bought it when she was being sweet, and I bought it when she was being evil. This is one of those movies where it seems you would get more out of it going in knowing as little about the movie as possible. I don't know the source material, but it seemed very comic bookie to me. Probably one of the most fun vampire movies I have seen since Fright Night (1985) which is the ultimate in my opinion. The only real disappointment I had with it was the reveal of the girl's father. I was expecting either a big star cameo or someone who carried a little more gravitas than who showed up. And I enjoyed all the ballerina moves during the kills. The taking over of the other girl's actions was a nice touch. Lots of fun! My rating: ****1/2 out of ***** ps. This kid made me laugh every time he spoke in the movie. Just saw he died in 2023! https://www.syfy.com/sites/syfy/file...2.30.12_pm.jpg |
Re: "Abigail" Reviews/Discussion - 2024 Horror Challenge
Abigail is a fun film. The unrelenting splattery blood popping of the second half clashes with the slowness of the first. It's rare studio horror is this visceral. I think the Abigail works best as a homage to Universal Studio tropes; I read it is intended as a remake of Dracula's Daughter. The group of strangers coming together in a near gothic castle seems right out of the playbook, with a ballroom style party scene. Homaging forgives some slowness in the setup. Abigail is a great twist; a fearsome creature of the night with emotional issues deep for her apparent age. Speaking of twists it might overstretch some with turn after turn in the end. Alisha Weir is great for the role but sometimes too sidelined (economy of effects and frights makes sense but this film doesnt shy away from the biting and the gore); and it felt like they tried to make Abigail too ambiguous or even not a bad guy (it starts with her kidnapping). I really like the Kathryn Newton dance scene. The bit at the very end felt odd, and I think it might had been better if the Kristoff subplot proceeded differently.

Re: "Abigail" Reviews/Discussion - 2024 Horror Challenge
This was fine as a new horror movie, but I didn't love it. It's billed as a horror comedy, but I didn't find it particularly funny (as others have mentioned). It felt like it was trying to copy Ready Or Not's emphasis on extreme gore (exploding bodies etc). Towards the end everything was blood covered all the time. That fell a little flat for me. I love Dan Stevens, but didn't love his character in this. All the 'fucks' he used in every sentence were supposed to be funny, I suppose, but again fell a bit flat. The little girl did a fantastic job, and I liked the contrast between the sweet little ballerina and vampire. But I have questions: How was she made and I guess she'll always be a child? Her dad, Matthew Goode, is one of my favorites from A Discover of Wtiches. I wish he'd been in it more.
Overall, this was a decent first-time watch, but not one I'll revisit. Still--glad I watched it at least once. A bit curmudgeon-y 3/5 stars from me. Maybe I'm just a bit burnt out on horror at this point in the challenge. This was #85 for me and my last film this go-round. |

Ended up watching this three times in about a month. Once in September not realizing it was an October subset, and then again early this morning without then with commentary. My thoughts (via clckworang) remain the same. Even looking for the comedy in the final viewings I don’t see how this is listed as a comedy. It’s a film with some comedic moments, like 99.9% of all films.

It's a moderately enjoyable vamopire film, but the studio PR flacks ruined the big twist in the reviees. There's no surpise when we see the sweet litle ballerina is actually a deadly predator,
