Great review. I first saw this movie at a very young age of about 7 years at a drive-in with my parents. Recently I bought the DVD and watched it with my wife who had never heard of it but is a great fan of Don Knotts in the Andy Griffith Show.
I have a question about the DVD version. I thought for sure when I saw the original movie there was a scene in which someone's eyes are looking out of one of the portaits on the staircase as Luther was climbing the stairs. But I didn't see this in the dvd release. Was part of the original film lost or damaged and not make it to the dvd, or am I remembering this scene from some other movie?
In any case, great movie!

I don't remember that particular shot...but I never saw the movie in the theater--just on TV. It's possible...but you could also be thinking of about a 100 other movies that have used that shot, too!
Maybe a Don Knotts expert out there will know and post it!

I'm wondering if you're not thinking of The Andy Griffith Show episode where Andy, Barney, and Gomer are in the haunted house, and the picture is watching them.
