Robotech Protoculture Collection -- Any reviews of the DVD set?
Can somebody tell me if this collection is exactly the same as the "Remastered" sets in regards to the AV and Sound quality? How about the extras? Is it taken from the "Remastered" sets? If so, are they similar to the "Legacy" collection?
Thanks

We picked this up yesterday, according to the packaging, it's the remastered discs with the extras from the original Legacy releases. I just fired up Boobtrap right now, it looks great, and is reading 5.1. I'm getting good LFE and activity in the surrounds. The narrator is very clear.
The sepia tone flashbacks seem clearer than they ever were.
I still think 10 years is too short of a time for a complete rebuild, but...
You can still the artifacts of age, but otherwise it's very nice.
Gosh that Lisa is such a bitca....
Rick's stunt plane's got some oomph to it now.
I keep wanting to complain about something, but I'm realizing it's the original grain.
"What is Robotech anyways?" really sounds like, "What are midichlorians?"
You can almost see the multiple film planes of Breetai's fleet.
"Captain! No smoking on the bridge!" Now that's how you write comedy in a sci-fi drama.
We never picked up the previous Remastered sets, so I can only compare to the originals, but I'm seeing a lot of film artifacts that seem to be revealed by the cleanup. I wonder if they cleaned it up too good.
Rick's crash has some oomph to it too now.
I guess the stunt plane flashback when Rick starts spiraling is new to the Remastered editions. I just played the original in the laptop here and it's not there.
Also, the effects really drown out the score in places.
Not bad if I do say so myself, still not sure if we're going to get rid of our Legacy sets.
Also, the disc started with previews for other cities, but the menu button on my Sony jumped right to the menu.
My wife is the real protoculture addict, I'll have her post something later.

The packaging does leave something to be desired. It looks nice and all, but each of the four groups (Macross, Masters, NG, extras) are in a book like thing with those clear plastic trays that are bound on one side by what looks like tape. Kinda similar to the Dune miniseries DC release. I'm a little worried about it's long term shelf life, but we'll see.

I just finished reviewing this LorenxoL, and Milo's correct; it's the remastered DVDs and the bonus discs from the legacy series. You can read my review here:
