Contest: Pick $50 worth of movies for me to buy from DDD and win a prize!

My wife said that i could order $50 more worth of movies from DDD in this sale, so considering i have no real idea on what to get i decided to make a contest. Here's how it will work:

1. You can submit any size order as long as it doesn't go over $50.

2. No movies that i already own. You can check my collection in Sig.

3. Only one order per person. So you cannot post 10 different orders and try to get the prize that way.

4. All entries must be made by Friday 10 p.m. Central time.

5. On Friday night, I will then make a poll with the best/most interesting orders. Everyone will then be able to vote on which order i will make. This poll will be closed by 10 p.m. Saturday.

THE PRIZE: The winner of this poll will receive at LEAST Armageddon: Criterion Collection. Free shipping and handling. Everything. If this becomes a popular idea then i will include a few other movies i have laying around. I've decided to add Snow White and the Seven Dwarves: Platinum Ed. to the Prize package.

That's it. Post an order and you could win some free movies. Pretty simple. So get cracking and help me buy some movies. Also, you can edit your order up until the deadline Friday 10 p.m. central time.

Thanks

ok i tried to play into your taste, a cool serial killer noir that is too often overlooked, a Leone masterpiece to bookend your once upon a time in the west dvd, a fun sequel to complete your collection, and a matinee title that appeals to both young & old like many of the titles in your collection, and a great foreign horror suspence flick and one of Tartans better titles in my opinon. And if you can find some change in between the seats some classic kung fu action..

THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER 9.12
GOOD THE BAD AND THE UGLY (2D/SE) 19.98
Young Guns 2 5.99
Rocketeer 9.36
A tale of two sisters 14.98

this is under 50 by a few bucks after 20%

five fingers of death is 3.99

if you added that you would be over .74 at 50.74 after the discount.

Ra: I actually have Truman Show on order, it just hasn't arrived yet. If you want to change that part you can.

I have Truman show and Batman Begins on order, so those are not available. I almost forgot about those.

Cool idea. Rather than going with a lot of decent movies (which seems to be a popular trend -- not that there is anything wrong with that), I offer this order:

X FILES MYTHOLOGY V.03-COLONIZATIO $ 24.84 1 $ 24.84
UGETSU (CRITERION) $ 23.00 1 $ 23.00

Total = $47.84

Since you have the first two, you need X-Files Mythology vol. 3. Now is as good a time as any to catch up with the latest release (for now). That was a pretty easy pick, looking at your collection.

My second choice, Ugetsu, is simply because it is a great film and a wonderful DVD release. You also own the Kurosawa CC box set, so you would definately appreciate Ugetsu. If you are a fan of extras, like most CC releases, this DVD release will definately provide.

OK. I'll take a shot. Looking at your Owned list we share a lot of titles. I avoided your wish list to not take the safe way out, but put this order together from the few places where our collections differed. I shuffled around with several other titles but pound for pound, I think the order I've put together is solid:

OPEN RANGE $ 11.04
FARGO (SE) $ 7.29
THE FLY (SPECIAL EDITION/2 DISC) $ 11.03
THE THING (CE) $ 11.19
WE WERE SOLDIERS $ 7.48

Your Subtotal after 20% discount: $ 48.03

***Updated to replace the Babe/Babe Pig in the City 2-pack with my backup Open Range. The Babe picture matched the WS 2-pack bundle I own. Universal must have slimmed down and reissued that 2-pack as a revised-double-feature-single-disc-dual-sided-craptastic-full-screen release based on the details and new UPC.***

The problem is that you can get them both from Amazon for $31.94 shipped.

Sorry, somebody had to say it.

Still great choices though...

FRAILTY $ 4.79
BOOMTOWN-1ST SEASON $ 15.11
UNDECLARED-COMPLETE SERIES $ 23.92
FREQUENCY $ 5.76

Total - $ 49.58

Based off of your tv shows, you should really like both Boomtown and Undeclared. As for Frailty and Frequency, i'd recommend them to anyone.

I'm trying to go for the most bang for the buck here. Seven DVDs for $47.92 I couldn't find anything for under $2.60.

THE ADVENTURES OF BUCKAROO BANZAI

I see you have Big Trouble in Little China, so this would be perfect for a W.D. Richter double feature.

ANNIE HALL

One of the best movies of the seventies, certainly one of Woody Allen's best. See also: Manhattan.

GALAXY QUEST

A surprisingly entertaining tribute to Star Trek fandom.

THE HAUNTING

Some of the scariest scenes of any horror movie ever made. Definitely better than that piece of shit remake that you already own.

LOGAN'S RUN

Better than people give it credit for. Plus skimpy outfits on hot women for less than $5.00

MUMFORD

A nice, quiet Larry Kazdan movie with some great subtle performances from Jason Lee, Hope Davis and what appears to be a young Charles Grodin. Even Martin Short isn't too annoying. See also" Grand Canyon, Silverado.

THE TAKING OF PELHAM 1 2 3

A relatively obscure crime film with a light touch. Totally awesome. See it at least for the "colors" stolen by Tarantino for Resevoir Dogs.

Before Sunrise: ($7.91) - A really well written Linklater film. While most people prefer Before Sunset, I think this is the better of the two. Regardless, you need it to compliment Sunset.
Buffalo `66: ($7.42) - One of my five favorite films. For me, this movie has more replay ability than any other film in my 800+ title collection. I'd lose sleep if I didn't mention it. Hell, it'd be my pick if you said we could pick any one title up to $50.
Casablanca SE: ($16.30) - No explanation needed.
Citizen Kane SE: ($16.30) - Another that needs no explanation.

Total: $47.93

Damnit, man, why are you making me waste $32.60 with these two titles? They should've been in your collection long ago. Because they weren't, I was limited to four titles and forced to leave out so many great movies that you'd likely fall in love with. Regardless, I would be doing you a disservice if I didn't eat up half of your budget with those two must-own movies.

Thanks for the contest...and if the wife isn't looking, you might want to slip the $4.80 "Following" onto my list as well.

I'm not interested in winning the prize (as it's the only DVD I own where I truly hate the movie), but here are my suggestions:

It looks like you appreciate some foreign films, so I wanted to introduce you to the works of Alejandro González Iñárritu:

Amores Perros: $ 7.42 (This has the same actor, Gael García Bernal, as Motorcycle Diaries)
21 Grams: $7.92 (This one is English-language and has Benicio del Toro and Sean Penn)

Sticking on the theme of great movies by great Mexican directors, the director of the third Harry Potter movie, Alfonso Cuarón, made one of my all-time favorite movies about two teenage boys going after the same older woman. (If you're into that sort of thing, the movie has plenty of female nudity). And it's a great bargain.

Y tu mamá también: $7.30

It seems that comedy is your favorite genre. You don't seem to shy away from dark comedy. So let me present to you what might be one the darkest "mainstream" comedies to come around in a while:

Very Bad Things: $5.56

At that price it is an absolute steal. In fact, if you don't like it, I will pay you back for it if you send me the disc. Another great comedy is:

Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle: $9.50

This is possibly the funniest "mainstream" movie from the last two or three years (along with Old School).

Also, I will concur with illenium. Get my favorite Jim Jarmusch movie:

Ghost Dog: $4.79

To round out the picks, get a great film by David Mamet (who is one of my favorite writers, and adapted the screenplay for Hannibal).

Spartan: $6.43

there's some really good selections in here. Alot of stuff that i wouldn't think to order.

Just one thing: Try not to go off my wishlist. I haven't really updated it in quite awhile. Plus, the whole point is to get things i wouldn't normally get.

Anyways, sometime tonight around 10 central, i will post the 10 best orders. That's basically the only choice i will make, so basically it'll be up to you guys.

And since this does seem to be going well i've decided to up the prize! Along with Armageddon: CC, you will also receive Snow White and the Seven Dwarves: Platinum Ed. Both of these titles come with inserts and are in excellent condition. So Keep making those orders.

If anyone wants to, they can also change their order up until the deadline tonight.

My approach in this situation would be to get movies that I would like and that my wife might enjoy also. This way, she may approve more purchases in the future. These are all great movies (IMHO), and my wife really likes Run Lola Run and Leon. She likes Fight Club enough to watch it with me any time I want to see it, and she would watch Bubba Ho Tep again. Remember, you need to think for the long run--this is a DVD marathon, not a sprint. Get her on board and your library will grow.
Fight Club--$11.10
Run Lola Run--$11.12
Bubba Ho Tep--$10.93
Leon: The Professional DE--$15.60
Total: $48.75

Undeclared - $23.92
To Kill a Mockingbird (Legacy Series) - $15.59
Dark City - $4.47
What about Bob? - $5.04

Approximately $49.02 after 20% promotional discount.

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1990) $ 4.80
NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (SE) $ 4.79
CECIL B DEMENTED $ 7.42
DARK CITY $ 4.47
THE WAR OF THE WORLDS (SE/1953) $ 7.48
ZOMBIE PACK (3,4,5) $ 9.57
CREEPSHOW $ 4.79
HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES $ 5.75

Comes out to $49.07

Yeah, I went with good quality in quantities. 10 movies there. I noticed you had Dawn of the Dead (original and remake), but no Night of the Living Dead, so I through in the remake and original of those, at cheap prices. I left out Day of the Dead because it can be found cheaper at other places.

Okay . . . it took a little longer than I though because:

1) We appear to have INSANELY similar tastes, so you had a lot of ones that I would have suggested, and
2) I kept getting combinations that were between 15 and 50 cents over the limit.

But, based on your current collection and limited by your budget, I would strongly recommend the following movies:

CoverTitleDDD Sale
Price
Comments
Ikiru
(Criterion Collection)
$23.01You have other Kurosawa films in your collection and this is arguably, his greatest film.
All The Real Girls$15.31A visually stunning film with very raw, yet realistic, performances and "real life" kind of story line.

(Collector's Edition)
$11.51A modern classic . . . a touching story that deals with a very tough subject in a very funny and tender way.
TOTAL:$49.83
