How's The Butterfly Effect for a blind buy?

I'm wondering if I should take a chance on a blind buy for this one. I tend to enjoy dark movies and I wanted to see this one in the theater but missed it.

Well, it has gathered quite a cult following, and rec'd some good reviews.

On the other hand, my friends and I all thought it was horrendous when we saw a sneak preview of it.

I would say rent it first.

I went in with low expectations. I left the theatre quite surprised, its actually a good film. Worth picking up.

was wondering the same thing.
looks a lot like Time after Time (i think thats the film im remembering. about using hypnosis to travel through time. based on a book by jack finney. time after time might be the name of the books sequel...but...im close, i think) but more dark.

I liked it quite abit. If you pick it up, be sure to watch the theatrical cut first. Then if you REALLY want to be depressed, check out the directors cut. Yikes.

The movie was better than what I expected. However, I would rent first.

I picked this up blind with a great deal of hesitation, but I must say I really liked this movie. My expectations were extremely low, and they were exceeded far beyond what I imagined.

And the director's cut is definately the way to go when watching.

I'd recommend renting it first - I did and I'm glad I didn't buy it. I thought the second half, although it had some good ideas, just got a little laughable. Ashton mumbled throughout, but usually it wasn't worth going back to turn up the volume. I did like that they stuck with the ending they did.

My .02....this movie sucked!

(spoilers herein)

i understand what the movie was trying to do and the explanation of the chaos theory/butterfly effect in how one slight change in a pattern, most likely in the past could drastically alter the future so significantly.

how evan (Ashton K) being granted this "gift/curse" from his father could suddenly focus so intently on past writings as to actually transfer his current self into his former and change a bit of history that he either intentionally or unintenionally blocked out and thus change the future of the world, change destiny's of every single person he was directly (Lenny, Tommy, Kayleigh, his mom, dad) or indirectly (the woman, her baby) in contact with.

the movie also just tried to use shock tactics for shock tactics sake. i mean i admit i jumped like 3 or 4 times simply because the audio is indeed kickass and the tremor scenes or flashback scenes, every one used that bass jolt that is used in these low budget thrill/suspense movies. it is a tactic that a movie doesn't need so often to be taken seriously.

i wanted to like the movie, i did, but the acting was so bad. i mean you have to admit, ashton kutcher running in the finale scene in the hospital like a four legged undeveloped mammal was a bit much. and the usually effervescent amy smart, even in her soriority scene with evan was more plastic than barbie's dream cottage in malibu. and the child actors, especially tommy were horrible. at least make them believable as tormented kids, they looked more like tormented stick figures.

the whole movie just reaked cross between "12 Monkeys", "Donnie Darko" (as some have said, but i think only very slight resemblance) and what ever other flashback, maudlin-set-things-right movies you can imagine.

it just wasn't done right and the ending was only a small bit of solace, but still weak.

recommend rental if you can find some loose change in the crevasses of the couch!

I happened to like it, it wasn't as bad as others may say it is.

What was the difference between the 2 versions anyway??? Any thoughts.
Thanks.

Without giving away too much of what actually happens, the main body of the movie is about the same, but it's the ending that's completely different. There are a few more minutes added in here and there in order to set up the ending, but beyond that the bulk of the movie is unchanged. If you put the disc in a DVD-ROM drive on your computer you can actually watch the scenes that were added and/or altered for the director's cut.

Here's a bit more detailed explanation of what's different (warning - major spoilers for the Director's Cut and Theatrical version)

Spoiler:
Where the Theatrical Version gave some glimmer of optimism at the end when Evan sees Kayleigh walking down the sidewalk after a number of years, the ending for the Director's Cut gives no glimmer of hope at all. Instead of Evan watching a home movie of a party and then going back to that moment and scaring Kayleigh when they were kids so that she'd stay away from him, he watched a home movie of himself being born and he goes back and strangles himself to death with the umbilical cord in his mother's womb. Therefore he was never born and could never have had the chance to mess up the lives of everyone he knew. About halfway through the film there's a new scene where Evan and his mother go to a palm reader and she tells Evan that he has no lifeline and therefore should not exist. This upsets his mother greatly and after some talking she tells him that she had two still births before he was born, which taken with the ending leads the viewer to believe that his two "unborn" siblings before him were possibly born with the same "gift" that he had and ultimately came to the same conclusion. There's also an added scene where Evan as a teenager finds a document in his father's belongings that shows that his grandfather was "crazy" as well, hinting at the fact that this problem has been passed on for some time. The Director's Cut makes for a real downer of a movie, but in my opinion it makes for a much better one that's more consistant with the overall tone of the film.

I rented this from Netflix, and watched it last night. For some odd reason the disc Netflix shipped out didn't have the theatrical cut (just a one sided disc, not two-sided like it should've been).

Anyway, I watched it and loved it. I went and bought a copy so I could see the different, original ending. I don't regret buying it. I thought it was a rather intense thriller, and Ashton Kucher did a surprisingly good job here. I'm not generally a fan of his either.

bjh_18, thanks for the analysis. I thought that was spot-on.

I liked this movie a lot. Although I like the theatrical ending more than the DC ending.

No one has mentioned the Deleted Scenes which portray 2 more endings that were not obviously used :

"The Stalker Ending" and "The Happy Sappy Ending"

Check those out and see what you think.

Interesting that a movie based so much on "what if" also has "what if" endings.

I've also got the Netflix disc and had the same problem. Why would they only license and press one side of a flipper? What an oversight on their part. I sent them feedback to let them know of the problem. If they reply I will update this thread.

Great movie, for someone not to like this movie they must have some seriously high expectations for every movie they watch. This movie surprised the heck out of me and it was VERY entertaining, especially compared to what has been coming out of Hollywood lately. It seems like every other movie lately is a remake so this was a nice change of pace. Now I need to see the theatrical ending since I only saw the DC and although depessing, it was effective.

I got the same half-flipper, which actually says to turn the disc over for the theatrical--but of course, you can't...

What you guys probably missed, however (it's easy to miss) is that you *can* watch the theatrical ending... by turning on the "infinifilm" extras, and going to that part of the movie. It's not listed in the menu extras, but it's there in the infinifilm version...

Wow. This movie is out there. I definately prefer the DC ending to the theatrical one. Huge thumbs up.

It doesn't matter. You don't have to watch them in any certain order. Look here for the discussion that's been going on since the dvd's release:

http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthr...hreadid=373395

(and it seems a majority, including myself, prefer the Director's Cut)
