How's The Butterfly Effect for a blind buy?
I'm wondering if I should take a chance on a blind buy for this one. I tend to enjoy dark movies and I wanted to see this one in the theater but missed it.

Well, it has gathered quite a cult following, and rec'd some good reviews.
On the other hand, my friends and I all thought it was horrendous when we saw a sneak preview of it.
I would say rent it first.

looks a lot like Time after Time (i think thats the film im remembering. about using hypnosis to travel through time. based on a book by jack finney. time after time might be the name of the books sequel...but...im close, i think) but more dark.

I picked this up blind with a great deal of hesitation, but I must say I really liked this movie. My expectations were extremely low, and they were exceeded far beyond what I imagined.
And the director's cut is definately the way to go when watching.

I'd recommend renting it first - I did and I'm glad I didn't buy it. I thought the second half, although it had some good ideas, just got a little laughable. Ashton mumbled throughout, but usually it wasn't worth going back to turn up the volume. I did like that they stuck with the ending they did.

My .02....this movie sucked!
(spoilers herein)
i understand what the movie was trying to do and the explanation of the chaos theory/butterfly effect in how one slight change in a pattern, most likely in the past could drastically alter the future so significantly.
how evan (Ashton K) being granted this "gift/curse" from his father could suddenly focus so intently on past writings as to actually transfer his current self into his former and change a bit of history that he either intentionally or unintenionally blocked out and thus change the future of the world, change destiny's of every single person he was directly (Lenny, Tommy, Kayleigh, his mom, dad) or indirectly (the woman, her baby) in contact with.
the movie also just tried to use shock tactics for shock tactics sake. i mean i admit i jumped like 3 or 4 times simply because the audio is indeed kickass and the tremor scenes or flashback scenes, every one used that bass jolt that is used in these low budget thrill/suspense movies. it is a tactic that a movie doesn't need so often to be taken seriously.
i wanted to like the movie, i did, but the acting was so bad. i mean you have to admit, ashton kutcher running in the finale scene in the hospital like a four legged undeveloped mammal was a bit much. and the usually effervescent amy smart, even in her soriority scene with evan was more plastic than barbie's dream cottage in malibu. and the child actors, especially tommy were horrible. at least make them believable as tormented kids, they looked more like tormented stick figures.
the whole movie just reaked cross between "12 Monkeys", "Donnie Darko" (as some have said, but i think only very slight resemblance) and what ever other flashback, maudlin-set-things-right movies you can imagine.
it just wasn't done right and the ending was only a small bit of solace, but still weak.
recommend rental if you can find some loose change in the crevasses of the couch!

I rented this from Netflix, and watched it last night. For some odd reason the disc Netflix shipped out didn't have the theatrical cut (just a one sided disc, not two-sided like it should've been).
Anyway, I watched it and loved it. I went and bought a copy so I could see the different, original ending. I don't regret buying it. I thought it was a rather intense thriller, and Ashton Kucher did a surprisingly good job here. I'm not generally a fan of his either.
bjh_18, thanks for the analysis. I thought that was spot-on.

No one has mentioned the Deleted Scenes which portray 2 more endings that were not obviously used :
"The Stalker Ending" and "The Happy Sappy Ending"
Check those out and see what you think.
Interesting that a movie based so much on "what if" also has "what if" endings.

Great movie, for someone not to like this movie they must have some seriously high expectations for every movie they watch. This movie surprised the heck out of me and it was VERY entertaining, especially compared to what has been coming out of Hollywood lately. It seems like every other movie lately is a remake so this was a nice change of pace. Now I need to see the theatrical ending since I only saw the DC and although depessing, it was effective.

I've also got the Netflix disc and had the same problem. Why would they only license and press one side of a flipper? What an oversight on their part. I sent them feedback to let them know of the problem. If they reply I will update this thread.

What you guys probably missed, however (it's easy to miss) is that you *can* watch the theatrical ending... by turning on the "infinifilm" extras, and going to that part of the movie. It's not listed in the menu extras, but it's there in the infinifilm version...

(and it seems a majority, including myself, prefer the Director's Cut)
