DVD Talk review of 'Marx Brothers Collection'
I read John Sinnott's DVD review of Marx Brothers Collection at http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=10584 and...
The reason that "Room Service" lacks the touch of Irving Thalberg, besides his death, is that it was made by RKO, not MGM.

You are right that Room Service was made by RKO, but there is still a dramatic difference in the films the brothers under Thalberg and those that were made after his death. (Even their Paramount films more closely resemble the Thalberg-MGM movies than those made after Irving's death.)
After Thalberg died, the studio didn't support the Marx Brothers. You can see this in their movies. The quality writing and the luxury of trying their material out before a live audience (which they did with "A Night at the Opera" and "A Day at the Races" along with some of their earliest Paramount films) dried up after Thalberg died. The fact that they were lent out for a mediocre film like "Room Service" is another example of studio indifference.
