Should I get the Alien Quadrilogy?

I've only seen the first two movies, but should I pick this up anyway? I've heard the 3rd and 4th aren't that great, although Fincher is one of my favorite directors.

does the pope shit in the woods?? I'd say go ahead and pick up the box... even if you don't end up liking the last two films, I'm sure the supplements will be entertaining enough for any fan of the Alien movies in general... I hate 4 but am easily going to be buying this mammoth set.

YES. This set is monsterous. even if you don't like the last two films, it will make you happy just knowing you have this fabulous set in your collection.

GatorDeb 11-28-03 08:15 PM

I'd do it just to show support so we keep getting sets like this. I like learning about the technical aspects of movies so even if I hated the movies (I love all the Alien films) I'd get it.

But you never watch the extras, as you said earlier. Doesn't this set have like major, major extras?

LivingINClip 11-29-03 10:15 AM

I got the set earlier this week and I have to say it is an outstanding set . I only paid $70 for it - but I would of paid the MRSP $100 without a doubt.

clappj 11-29-03 10:36 AM

Absolutely not!!!

;)

I'm still waiting for the BTTF Trilogy Extra Supreme Combo Set

:D

B.S.Preston,ESQ 11-29-03 05:44 PM

No.

PalmerJoss 12-01-03 06:36 AM

Without question. 9 discs for $75? That is a bargain.

Geofferson 12-01-03 09:01 AM

Yes - buy it! :D

dvduser6 12-01-03 10:56 AM

As much as I was initially excited about the set, I'm waiting for the individual releases in January. I would only ever watch the first two films. I'm mildly interested in what folks have to say about the extended version of "Alien 3", and I never enjoyed the fourth film. To me, I don't understand why it was even made. I agree that the extras alone are staggering and that would be my main reason for picking up the set, but I'd rather focus on owning the films that I absolutely love and watch over and over again. IMHO, of course.

I would wait for the individual discs coming out in January.

Here's 5000 words on the Quadrilogy - http://filmfreakcentral.net/dvdrevie...quadrilogy.htm

My advice? Pick up the Quad; the backstories presented on ALIEN3 and ALIEN RESURRECTION compensate for any lack exhibited by the films themselves. This is hands-down the finest box set I've ever encountered.

Me too. Then get the first two, both are stone cold classics. The third one has some redeeming characteristics, but the fourth one just plain blows (IMO). To me, no amount of supreme DVD production or extras can overcome a bad movie, otherwise we'd all own the Pearl Harbor 4 disc.

Besides, it works out to 20 bucks a movie, for that price there's a lot available that's more watchable than Aliens 3 and 4, IMO

RyoHazuki 12-01-03 07:16 PM

Buy the box set. I own Pearl Harbor 4 disc set. Whats the problem with that?

B.S.Preston,ESQ 12-01-03 07:52 PM

Just buy Alien: Resurrection. It is the only ALIEN film worth owning IMHO.

Lee Harvey Oswald 12-01-03 09:42 PM

How's the bonus disc? How long are the features for the first 2 movies?

cross 12-01-03 10:25 PM

I'm planning to wait till January to just get Alien and Aliens. I figure 4 disc for 30 dollars or 9 discs for 60 is basically the same thing.

I also don't end up with 2 movies which most everyone agrees aren't very good movies but want to have just for the sake of completing a collection.

Then again, I'm just a casual collector of ~50 dvds myself.

Besides, I'll have an easier time selling off the individual discs when they release the Alien Ultimate Uber Facehugger Queen Edition =)

island007 12-04-03 06:50 PM

This is a nice set, and it is only in the $60 - 70 range.

When I picked up the original Legacy box, I fully realized that the first 2 are the superior films, but for some reason, I found myself putting in Alien Resurrection over and over again. Can't explain it.

my sentiments exactly.
i was just gonna wait for the first two as i loathe 3 and could care less about 4, but i picked it up and have to admit its worth every penny.

this set is simply a monumental, substanative achievment-
the scope of it is breath-taking and all for under $60 from DDD.
may seem daunting at first, but its really a no-brainer after you sit down with it for any amount of time.

Space_Monkey 12-05-03 12:45 PM

Despite the fact that there are not individually packaged keepcases for each film, I highly recommend the Quad set. Since Alien and Aliens are a given I will focus on the latter two DVDs.
The day it arrived, the first thing I did was watch the assembly cut of Alien3 and I think it has excellent replay value. I always thought Alien3 was underrated(it suffers from comparison to the first 2 films in the series) and this new version is even better despite that fact that some of the dialog was not ADR and some holes in the logic remain. It's also the bloodiest of the 4 films if that's your thing. The supplements are very honest about the problems and I'm amazed that the film turned out as well as it did. The lack of any contribution by Fincer to the supplements is unfortunate.
Resurrection is my least favorite of the series but it contains enough value to warrant inclusion in even my collection. My main issues with the film stem from
Spoiler:
The creation of that alien hybrid abomination... It was too much of a departure from the formula. The aliens are bad-ass enough... don't mess with a good thing. Also I think they wasted an opportunity to have Ripley's alien genes win out in the end and somehow have her introduce the alien species to Earth to set up another sequel.
It's worth owning even it it infrequently finds its way into my dvd rotation.
The Ninth disc is icing on the cake and since it usually works out that box sets are valued at just under $10 a disc, in this case it is possible to get 9 discs for around $60 which was well worth it.

indycohiba 12-05-03 09:05 PM

I did and I had the legacy set which I just sold for $30 to offset the $63 I paid for it with STL.

"I'm mildly interested in what folks have to say about the extended version of "Alien 3", and I never enjoyed the fourth film. To me, I don't understand why it was even made."

this is part of the reason i want the set so badly. i want to watch the extras and better understand how 3 and 4 came to be. i find them fascinating in that trainwreck way. plus, i haven't even seen 4 since the theatrical debut. i'm wondering if it's still as gooey as i remember...?
