After beeing through with the films (supplement to follow) I really have to say that i'll have to do my ranking (so far 2,1,3..................4).
I never really hated Alien 3 (only Resurrection) but didn't like it too much either.
With this new cut I will rank it as second best Alien Movies. Although there are still some flaws in the story this really shows what Fincher was about to do......and hell yeah, it would've been a real Fincher Movie.

Picked up Alien Quadrilogy at Sam's Club for $63.86. Can't wait to watch it all this holiday season!

Rosario 12-10-03 07:19 AM

I bought this about a week ago and I love it so far, the new extended version of alien 3 makes it much better, I hated the movie previous to it, but now it's not bad at all. I haven't checked out the extra features yet, probably will do some of that today.

one word: yes!

Duodenum, you just reminded me of something: Mallrats. I really don't like that movie, but I love the DVD. If I enjoy discs 5 - 8 of the Quadrilogy half as much as I enjoy the Mallrats DVD, it's probably worth picking up the whole set.

darqleo 12-14-03 02:21 PM

I love 1 and 2, but 3 & 4 I like only in bits and pieces. Still, 9 discs for $58.55 ($6.51 a disc) via DDD.com, I can't complain.

GatorDeb 12-14-03 07:42 PM

Am I the only one that enjoyed ALL FOUR films? :D

Hendrik 12-15-03 12:13 PM

No!

. . . :o . . .

NEUMANN 12-15-03 05:01 PM

I liked all 4 movies too,1 and 2 are the best but i still like the others

Artman 12-16-03 11:22 AM

Is it possible to turn off the captioning on A3 SE? I thought I had, but towards the end it started showing "steam hissing" captions in several places. What gives?

jackson walker 12-17-03 09:20 PM

Only buy it if you do not have one and two already. Unless you just like to spend your money. I actually liked the 3rd and the 4th movies a lot (Ryder!), but come on.
Just wait until the really crappy sequal "Alien Vs. Predator" comes out on video and really waste your money.

But don't pay $75. Other places have it for less. Amazon has it for $69.99 shipped.

Thanks for your input. I put it at the top of my Christmas list.
But now one more question: which cut of Alien3 should I watch first?

Good question. I'm pretty sure that box under the Christmas tree is the Quadrilogy, and I've never seen Alien3. Which cut first is a good question. Given how bad people say this movie is, I guess I figured I'd watch the new extended cut only. Anybody who's seen both have a different opinion?

Artman 12-20-03 06:24 PM

the only thing I didnt like about the EE was the ending. It is essentially the same, but done better in the theatrical I thought. I actually dont mind A3 much anymore, it looks awesome and the atmosphere is great. I just dont see why they had to include so much more gore and language than the previous films, but all well...

It's a friggin' Alien movie and you're wondering why there's gore?!

Calistoga 12-21-03 08:56 AM

I too sold my Legacy Set for it, and am very glad I did. This is, without question, the finest boxed set I own. If you are an Alien fan, my advise is buy it!

Costco has it for $62 with an instant rebate of $20 taken off at the register for a total price of $42.

"So much more" is what I said. Obviously I'm expecting a certain amount of carnage from an Alien movie. But you have to admit there was a big difference between the first two and the third. Being chopped up in a fan, buckets of blood being poured out, etc is what i'm thinking of.

jayson1017 12-28-03 05:28 PM

For $42, it definitely was worth getting. Would I spend a dollar more? No.

cajun_junky 01-01-04 02:03 PM

So which versoin of alien does everyone recommend? The original or recently released directors cut? BTW, doesn't the orignal version now have extra scenes?

del bosque 01-01-04 08:20 PM

Great set. What seems particularly impressive is the intention to give consumers as much material as the studio can possibly lay their hands on, including what appears to be (I haven't checked it out yet) a bucket load of Laser Disc extras as well. The only missing item is the isolated film score from the original Alien release. But I bought that DVD when it came out, so I'm okay. Dan O'Bannion's contributions to the first movies' extras are excellent, what-DVD-was-created-for sequences.

jayson1017 01-02-04 05:31 PM

cajun_junky:

I'd say the original version... Between the director's cut and theatrical version, there isn't much of a time difference (probably a couple minutes -- the director's cut removed some scenes from the theatrical release and added some other scenes).

I found the original version more fulfilling since I was used to it (this is a biased opinion).

Are you talking about the new footage markers? If so, go to the special features menus where there is an option to turn it off.

Also, the introduction says that some of the sound/dialogue in the new footage needed to be supplemented by subtitles, maybe this is why.

Regarding the set, Alien and Aliens are excellent. I always had a fondness in my heart for Alien3 despite all its flaws. The extra footage goes a long way to making the film more enjoyable and logical. The supplements for this disk are extremely interesting where all involved talk about the problems in production resulting in a flawed movie. I was impressed with the honesty of the interviews.

I watched Alien Ressurection two days ago and it was just ok. I had seen it before and it didn't really leave a great impression on me but there were some very enjoyable bits.

I definitely recommend buying the set. I've now seen 3 of the 4 movies (still haven't seen the new version of Alien) and have something like another 30 hours of material to get through!
