Just watched The Fifth Element-Superbit

Very upset with this one!!! The bit rate was much lower then Desperado. I don't have a non superbit Fifth to compare to, but the graph showed high 7 to 8 and sometime spiking to the nines. The sound was good, but why was this not released in 1.85???? I didn't bother to read the back because I thought all Superbit was 1.85.

I can't wait to check out "Airforce One"

As an old-timer at DVD Talk, there aren't too many terms that trip me up, but what do you mean "released in 1.85"? Are you talking about the OAR or something?

It's not 1:85 because it's not a 1:85 movie. T5E is a 2:35 movie, therefore the DVD is in 2:35.

I disagree, I thought that the Fifth Element Superbit had a great picture. The colors were more vibrant than anything I had seen, and it was very clear, at least on my old 27" tv.

I always thought DVDs(any) looked excellent on a 27 or a 36. But Since I bought a 65 16x9, details are much more noticeable. Desperado was done really well. The proof is in the bit rate. Desperado was higher throughout the entire movie compare to T5E.

correct me if i'm wrong, but i thought i read that 2:35 was the best aspect ratio and used in the highest quality films... i prefer it to the other ratios because its extremely wide.

2.35:1 always seemed a bit excessive to me.... Like viewing a movie on a strip of tape

Nah, not all look good. I noticed a little bit of fuzziness on the Air Force One Superbit DVD when I watched it this weekend. In the blue sky there was some grain that was very noticeable even from my seat in the middle of the room (not right up on the TV). Normally I will notice if something like that is a bit off, but that is really the first time I noticed it on a Superbit movie.

2.35 is the "best" AR if that's what the director wants. Traditionally, 2.35 has been used for films which are fairly "epic" sized, where the wide picture creates an almost overwhelming experience for the audience.

There are simply some films which wouldn't make much sense with a 2.35 AR -- just as there are some films that wouldn't make much sense in 1.85. This doesn't mean that one AR is better than the other in general, just that certain ratios are prefered for certain types of movies.

Steven Spielberg shoots exclusively in 1.85, but I think most people would say Schindler's List is still a "high quality film."
