I really don't know what others think about this comparison, many people on DVDTalk like LoA and many people like Seven Samurai...and many like both. I have never seen LoA, but I've heard good things. I have seen Seven Samurai, though, and I love it. Of course, I like Kurosawa and Mifune, so that might add a little to it for me, but I say go with Seven Samurai. You probably won't go wrong with either one, though.

Seven Samurai is my number two film after Cinema Paradiso. It has been used by many directors as a source for ideas, and it has also been copied to an American version in Magnificient Seven with Yul Brynner, Steven McQueen and others. If you have not seen it and would like to see a film with many themes and plots that is tied into one major theme, you should definitly go with Seven Samurai.
Lawrence of Arabia is further down on my list, yet it is a great film. However, I can watch the Seven Samurai again, while with Lawrence of Arabia I have to wait longer until I could watch it again. The difference between Seven Samurai and Lawrence of Arabia is that Seven Samurai has a better edge on the side plots and themes in a more natural manner than Lawrence of Arabia. Moreover, the characters in Seven Samurai are more interesting than in Lawrence of Arabia. I would pick Seven Samurai with no hesitation, but both deserves to be in your collection. Both has a honorable spot in my DVD collection.

You've picked two of the greatest movies ever made to choose from... and it's a real tough choice.
Personally, I think The Seven Samurai is the better film. Grab that one this weekend, save your pennies, and grab LoA next weekend.

Both are great films and I love thwm both but if faced with this choice, I'd have to say SEVEN SAMURAI. Why?
Better directing, better acting, better story and although T.E. Lawrence is an interesting character I think that SEVEN SAMURAI has more interesting characters.

I would have to go with Lawrence. Why? The sheer magnitude of Politics, Colonialism and Cinema all rolled into one great tragic hero (Real History be damned)! Seven Samurai is good, but it just has never effected me in the same way that Lawrence has.
