The setting entirely depends on how your speakers are set up. What the feature does is change the phase of the subs frequency by 180 degrees. That could mean constructive or destructive interferrence with your other speakers (mostly your mains). Try both setting and see which one works best with your set-up. It is all physics and entirely depends on your speaker arrangement, as I have already stated.

I realize what it does by switching the phase. But how can it affect the other speakers? I am not clear on that...because hte pahse will just be switched for the sub, correct? and how does the speaker placement affect this as well?

IIRC, phase cancellation is especially problematic for LFE, but shouldn't be that bothersome. If you think that your sub is lacking, reversing the phase may improve the LFE. It would also be important in a 2-sub system that the two subs are in-phase, otherwise they'd cancel each other out.
