My friend is hopping into the Home Theater foray and is looking to buy a good system. Only problem is, he is limited right now to 1500 bucks. Any reccomendations for my friend? Thanks in advance.

and after he stops laughing....

I would recommend you buy used pieces. $1500 can get him a really low end new setup or an OK used one.

Wow a post outside the other forum. Anyway, my setup cost less than 1500 bucks and it is actually pretty good. 27 inch Sony Trinitron for 400, Sony Str-de-845 for 400, RCA 5220 for 130. The speakers I use are from a Sharp DD Shelf system I picked up for 350, and they get the job done, the shelf system is now used as an amp for the sub. Less than 1500 altogether if I did the math right.

Anyways, he already has a 36" Mitsubishi tv. The 1500 is for Speakers/Sub/Etc. Any ideas before I go with him shopping tommorow?

Goto http://www.liquidprice.com read about the site and it works great. Picked up my Sony 555ES receiver for $500.00 last year. Its list price way $1000.00. I liked the way it worked. Give it a try.

Good lord 1500 for speakers, sub, and reciever(I am assuming) man I could have fun with that. You know your freind might want to wait a bit cause Dolby Pro Logic 2 is coming soon and I have heard some good things about it. I am looking to get an external decoder and get some use for my 5.1 channel inputs.

Personally, I would make sure to get a good receiver. Even if that means you will only have enough money left to get 2 speakers. I would much rather have a good receiver and a nice set of stereo speakers than a mediocre receiver and 5.1 speaker system.

With a good receiver which will be the backbone of your HT, you can enjoy quality stereo. And when budget permits again, I would then add a matching center speaker, surround and then sub, one by one but not necessarily in that order.

You know, Energy makes a pretty decent surround sound type setup. Comes with the 5 speakers and a powered Sub and it coest around $1000, then you got $500 for a decent (not great, but good) receiver.
