What specs should I look for on a DVD player?

And on DVD's, for that matter? I'm new and you guys have probably seen this question a thousand times but I'd appreciate the help.

What brands should I avoid outright? Should I wait for recordable DVD?

Pioneer and Sony are the best. Don't bother waiting for recordable dvd, you'll die of boredom.

I'd definitely look for one that can play CD-R, as well as MP3 and VCD.

Oh, and "in before the lock"

One that will pass a DTS stream. You don't need an "on board" DD/DTS decoder, get a reciever for that. Another vote here for Sony.
