I am having a home built, should be done sometime in late April or early May. I want to have them go ahead and put in my surround sound speakers, but don't have much experience with that stuff. So far, all I know is that I definately want them to put the speakers, so is there anything I should ask for specifically, or anything I should tell the people who are putting them in?
Also they can also just pre wire for the speakers, so I might just buy the speakers myself, so if there are any sites where I can get good speakers at good prices, I'd also like to know, or if there is anything else that I might need to know it would also be appreciated.
Thanks

Well, all I can add really is make sure that they put them in the right place!
If they are going to be the surround speakers in your home theater setup they should be located to the sides(or slightly behind) and about 3 feet above the listening area.
Do some searches for more tips on the exact surround speaker positioning.
I would not really recommend buying speakers on-line. First off, you can't hear and test the darn things with your own ears. And some places are not authorized dealers so if something goes wrong, your warranty will be worth zilcho.
Woof!

Dogg, check the Houston Yellow Pages for a HT installer or high-end store, and go ask them for tips. You might find it more cost-effective in the long run to have them do some specs that can be shared with your general contractor. In my area, there are several high-end stores that do that, as well as some communications/ telephone/ internet service providers that will assist a home builder with that. They can assist you with pre-wiring, too.

I would check www.avsforum.com ,there are many members who have custom hometheaters and there are some installers in that forum.

also make sure you get good speaker wires if they wire it. since you are getting it wired in the walls anyways i might go with either 16 or 18 gauge. if you dont know 16 is better. the smaller the number the thicker the cable

You have the unique ability to go with quality inwall speakers. Lots of people rip on them, but there are some sweet ones availible that will make any room sing, not to mention the huge WAF. They even have inCEILING subwoofers and THX certified inwalls. I reccomend going out and grabbing a couple Home Theater magazines and reading up. Also their webpage has a bunch of info about this kind of stuff. I envy your position. Building theaters is something I'm considering doing as a profession...

Tweeter had an in-store magazine about their custom instillation service with a bunch of tips and such, I think they have some Texas stores If not check outpost.com which is the online parent company. Make sure you have your plans in hand before they put in drywall. So far all the above advice seems sound. Cructhfield, Cambridge Soundworks (aka Hifi.com) also both sell in-wall speakers of varying cost quality so you may want to check their sites for tips and such. Consider a ceiling mounted rear center for your 6.1 even if your current receiver isn't 6.1 you'll be ready when it is.
BTW I am very jealous.
As far as having them run the speaker wire only issue I can see is you'll have to settle on placement so they can put the wire through. Its pretty simple to cut the holes in the wall if your handy. The mfr. will give you a template to trace for the foot print and you cut it out and connect the wires to the speaker and your done.
