It went away, thankfully it would seem. Just never saw it before and thought it was odd and that the S was standard. I got worried. I’m not sure how that got on.

SDR is the colorspace found in ordinary HD and Blu-ray. HDR is the expanded colorspace found on most UHDs.

The movie doesn't have DV.

Re: The 4K newbie thread.

It said that it was authored in DV. So I set it on, HDR stays auto, but still only shows HDR.

Re: The 4K newbie thread.

Are you certain that player specifies Dolby Vision on that status display? It can be confusing because HDR is a general term and Dolby Vision is a specific HDR format (other formats, just to make it confusing, are HDR10, HDR+, and HLG). Your player might display "HDR" there regardless of the specific HDR format. Did the Dolby Vision logo ever pop up briefly by any chance?

Re: The 4K newbie thread.

No, I never saw the DV signage when I check the info on particular 4K disc. I just don’t understand when I turn DV on why HDR is set to auto and if I turn it HDR off, the DV option turns off as well.

When I have DV turned on and put in a regular blu-ray, this pops up right briefly after the disc spins up.

But when checking "Display" menu when movie starts, I see this

This is what my set up looks like. HDR has to be set to auto, but then I have no idea if I’m getting the DV picture or not.

Dolby Vision comes up with Fandango at Home movies. 🤷🏼‍♀️

For my Blu-ray player, would it matter if I kept Dolby Vision on for every disc, all the time?

TomOpus 04-15-26 07:48 AM

Re: The 4K newbie thread.

I keep it on. Some say turn it off for non DV discs, if there's a difference, it's negligible to me.

I'm pretty sure you've been warned multiple times throughout this thread that leaving Dolby Vision turned on for non-DV discs will mess up the picture. But don't take our word for it, the easiest thing you could do is test a couple of Blu-rays and HDR10-only 4ks by toggling DV on and off. See if it changes the picture and see if you care.

Wouldn't switching Brands be the best course of action for Oldboy? (psst..Go Panny)

Again, I would suggest trying discs both ways just to see for yourself instead of relying on the word of others. It would take you less time than it did to post in this thread.

Is one encode better the other? DV vs. HDR?

I assume you mean DV vs HDR10?

DV is the superior technology, but that doesn't necessarily mean that a disc automatically looks better in DV compared to HDR10. Many do, but it's all in how it's utilized. However, I don't think there are any examples of discs that look worse in DV.

Does streaming 4K movies look and sound the same if it were a physical copy?

On my 55" with audio thru the tv (or my AirPods Pro) I can't tell the difference. I know the bitrates are lower with streaming (and which streaming service you are using). Most of the time I go for convenience and just stream unless it's only a physical copy.

On a good display? No.

Streaming 4K often looks to me as halfway in PQ between BD and UHD. Maybe the 4K/6K-shot Netflix/Amazon shows look decent in streaming 4K but older productions look better most of the time on disc.
