Folks,

I just purchased a Yamaha HTR-5280 (my mouth still waters when I look at all the ins/outs...). My goal is to get Dolby Digital and DTS sound from my DVD collection. The 5280 has built-in DD/DTS. Do I need to buy a DVD player that has DD/DTS out? Or can I continue to use my current player (Philips Magnavox DVD420AT), which has DD but not DTS?

Does the DVD player need to have a built-in DTS and/or DD decoder, or DTS outs, or both, or neither?

Confused...

What you need is a dvd player that passes the DTS signal through its digital output.

If your dvd player has a DTS logo on it, you're all set. If not, you'd need to get one to be able to play DTS.

I'm not familiar enough with your dvd player to know whether or not it passes the DTS bitstream; the DTS logo or lack of one should tell you for sure whether it does.

Of course you'll still be able to play DD5.1 with your current setup, since all dvd players will pass a DD5.1 bitstream through a digital output.
