I have a new dvd player and every now and then it fails to read the audio correctly resulting in a 3-4 sec silence as the movie plays on. Well I am returning it and getting a new one as this is a defect.

The main question is though, how do you tell if it's the movies that are bad?

The reason I ask is I was watching Great Expectataions and at the start the screen froze and I saw "check disk" or soemthing like that. Later in the movie it froze on me food good. At one other point the guy was talking on the phone and it just jumped to another scene.

As mentioned befor my player never did any of these things so I'm guessing it's the movie that is a defect, correct?

First of all what DVD player do you have?

Second of all did you try the DVD(s) that you had trouble with in other DVD players?

Is this the Toshiba SD-2300 you bought about a week ago? Has it been messing up with any other disks?

Also, look at the back of "Great Expectations", is it clean or is it scratched?

Basically, if it only happens with Great Expectations I would think that it was the movie, if it happens with several movies then it is the player -- exchange it then.

I think it's pretty rare for a DVD movie to be bad. You're not talking about rentals are you? That's another matter.

DVD's may have newer features than your player can handle, such as seamless branching, but they wouldn't be considered bad -- just unplayable by your player. A replacement DVD would behave just the same.

If you have more than one DVD that you're having trouble with, it's probably your player. I don't remember seeing a bad DVD -- just ones that wouldn't play correctly on my crappy player but play fine on my good one. And as cloud said, try it on another player if you can.

Yes Heat the player is the Toshiba SD2300.
I now recall that when I opened Great Expectations and looked at the disk, it sure did look like some sort of prints on it. They were not finger prints just oily marks.

Now my question is how do I go by cleaning by disks? Any way to do it with just things around the house, or do I have to buy a cleaning kit?

I'm sure this will resolve the Great E...movie problem, but I continue to have skipping problems with the player which I hope won't have once I exchange it for another one. (movies are fine I have checked them on another player)

I'm just starting to worry that the SD2300 is not all that, even though I never saw anyone include negatives about it in their review.

A couple of years ago, it would have been tough, but these days, you can find another friend or relative who also has a DVD player. Chances are it's a different player, but even if it's the same, you can do the test. Just play it in their system. Or if they also have a copy of the movie, play their disc in your system (but I'm not sure how popular Great Expectations is to warrant that many people having it). Anyway, this is usually the least costly way to figure out where the problem is before you go returning the wrong thing.
