Go with the Sony STR-DB940. I have the 930 and love it. My brother has the ES555 (last year's model) and my dad just bought the new ES444. If you go with an ES model you do get a sweet 5 year warranty. Extra incentive.

I have the Sony DB-940, Infinity rs-5 fronts, Infinity cc-2 center, and JBL N-24 rears. The DB-940 rocks the house for sure but still kicks the crap out of the Kenwood it replaced in every way shape and form. It has great clear sound and tons of tweaks and goodies that the others in this price range don't. Go to www.audioreview.com and check the reviews. Good luck and remember to get a great price too, I paid $399 shipped when it first came out this year.

I have never understood the knee-jerk reaction to the better Sony gear (I totally understand the hatred of their DE/consumer line). Oh well, their loss.

David, I have a Yamaha RX-V795 DD/DTS reciever. I love the thing. It's a solid reciever. I say look for a Yamaha within your budget.

Here's the link to the one I have, at audioreview.com

If you don't mind refurbs, then try uBid. I got a Denon 3300 for $440 and so far no problems. They always have a few 1801, 2801, and 3300 models on auction, plus some of the other units mentioned here. I would recommend the extended warranty, just for peace of mind.

There are alot of different views out there...and many different receivers. I've got the Sony STR-DB930 and absolutely love it. It replaced a Sony GA7-ES that was only 5.1 ready. My 930 was about $479 or so and worth it to me.

They are all good. Just pick one and you'll be happy.

Get the 6.1 reciever, Get an outlaw 6.1 dd/dts reciever!

www.outlawaudio.com

You can get a new one for $600, or a refurb fixed one for $500.

Outlaw is Highly reguarded around http://www.hometheaterforum.com.

Don't worry Outlaw will play your 5.1 movies, and will create a phantom center channel for your 5 speakers for movies that use the 6.1 sound or the 5.1 ex. Really, this outlaw reciever is fantastic, and they have excellent customer service if thier product doesn't perform to thier standards.

Truly, one of the best sounding receivers, and best deal for $500.

www.audioreview.com is a fine place to check reviews for receivers.

I'm not near enough to a retailer, but what are the NAD and Rotel recievers going for nowadays? They're probably about 600+ but much better in sound quality...
