Does any of this make a difference if you don't have surround speakers? I have 2 Klipsch speakers and a Boston Accoustics subwoofer. I have no intention of adding a center channel and surround speakers. Should I get a DVD player without a decoder just to save a little money? Does Dolby Digital improve sound quality when just using 2 main speakers and a subwoofer? Thanks.

I guess you're using a stereo receiver (or stereo pre-amp and amp), right?
If you have no intention of adding a center channel and surround speakers, there is no reason whatsoever for you to get a DVD player with a decoder. None.

I would go as far as to say there is no point getting a DVD player period.

To use a DVD player with a Dolby Digital decoder (and take advantage of DD) you MUST HAVE a receiver that has DD 5.1 inputs on it! It sounds as thought you don't have that capabilty so you would be out of luck.
Your best bet would be to get a DVD player without the decoder (and save a lot of money) and pickup a DD/DTS receiver (not DD ready) and you will be all set! Also your problems with speakers getting drowned out would be solved with a DD/DTS receiver as these receivers have setting to setup the audio level of each speaker (Left, Right, Center, Left Surround, Right Surround) so that they all have the same sound level from the listening position. The DD/DTS receivers also have setups for delays for each speaker so that if the fronts are farther away then the surrounds the receiver can delay the signal from the fronts long enough so all the audio arrives at the listening position at the same time. It also is very important to buy a Sound Pressure Level (SPL) Meter (Radio Shack has good ones for $29.99) as they will let you get all the speakers set to the right levels!
