What sub do you have?
#52
Yamaha YST-SW45.
Yep, you read it right, the smallest sub in Yamaha's line of budget-priced front-firing subwoofers. Now before you start pitying me for my sorry choice let me point out a few facts. My HT room is in the basement and the sub is placed in a corner with two solid concrete walls on either side, a carpeted concrete floor beneath, and a very low sound-reflecting ceiling overhead. The acoustics of that room seriously amplify bass and I found that this little trooper does just fine for my situation. When properly calibrated, the volume is set at about 40% so there's plenty of range left if I really want to boom it. It even goes down to about 25hz without loss of detail which is quite good for such a little sub.
My point is that the room you're using for your HT impacts your choice of equipment just as much as your pocketbook. In my case I can get by with smaller speakers and sub without sacrificing much in the way of quality.
