It seems that many have powered subs. I like the flexibility of passive subs myself.

I have 2 12" Orion Extreme 4 ohms in some old Cerwin Vega end table sub boxes. I am using a Proton AA-2080 which is approx. 150x2 into 4 ohms to power them.

REL owners:

Do you guys use the speaker-level method of connection? REL believes that subs should not interfere with the mains and that subs should pick up where the mains leaves off, while running them full-range. Which is why REL subs are so flexible in X-over adjustments.

If you guys use the high-level inputs, how do you use your subs in your HT? Run mains as "large" and mix the LFE into the mains?

I chose the Paradigm PDR-12 over the PS-1000. It was several hundred bucks cheaper, for one thing, but secondly the PDR-12 is a ported design with a front-firing driver.

The PS-1000's are built using Paradigm's Dual-Cavity system. While that may sound great on paper, over on AUDIOREVIEW when I was shopping around I had some great input by folks who clearly knew alot more about subs than I did at the time...and they said "go listen to this and that and this and that...with both subs". So I did, and turns out...they were right. The PRD-12 had a much crisper sound, and was far more responsive. The PS-1000, while having 20 watts more power (ie: negligable), was also substantially less responsive...having bass that often times lagged several milliseconds behind when you "expected" to hear it. This was the nature of that non-ported design.

Don't get me wrong, its a great sub, but my ears told me to go with the 12" driver of the PDR series. And I couldn't be happier.....in Armageddon's criterion disc the approach to the asteroids had my hairs standing on end.

AUDIO FREAK

My home theater subwoofers are the Infinity HPS-1000, a 15" 1000W downfiring sub (extremely powerful bass) and a Velodyne FSR-15, a 15" 750W forward firing sub. My subs are both hooked up to the LFE output of my receiver and work great. Even my neighbor 2 houses down can hear when I watch a DVD!!

Paradigm PS 1200. I see several people with the PS 1000, but what about the PS 1200? Mine cost only a fraction more than the 1000, but then again, they are pretty close in performance.

I finally got my new sub, and it rules! I am very pleased with it. I haven't been able to fully test it out, but I watched The Haunting DTS and it was very very good in my opening. I watched some Matrix, that was also good. Now I must try it with some KoRn.

SirPablo - Congrats on the new sub. Another dvd that will give your sub a good work out is "Saving Private Ryan" chapter 16.

Frank S - How do you hook up another sub to your rear channels? I have (2) 8in. Atlantic Tech subs that I'd like to hook up but not sure how to wire them up correctly.

I just purchased the Acoustic Research S500. I haven't hooked it up yet, but it outgh to be nice. I am dying to watch T2 in DTS with it.

SenDog - You won't be disappointed. The S300 is very nice, I couldn't imagine how loud it'd be with the s500. I played some T2 DTS, and it was very nice. Try chapter 19, the canal chase scene. Also, just sit there for a while and listen to the DTS, Dolby Digital, and THX intros, they sound ncie as well (the digital intro it the best I think for the sub).

Meniscus Audio Umbra 2400. It's a vented push-pull compound woofer design using Eclipse 1238 woofers and Madisound's KG5230 plate amp. Bench testing reveals above 110 dB at 25 Hz.

It's the dilemma Music Quality-Movie Effects. I personally believe that you can tune the sub a bit better when using Rel's speaker level connection but that it sucks for movies.

I only have my Rel Stentor to the LFE and I'm quite pleased by it. Just try both methods yourself and see what you prefer.

I had a Cambridge Soundworks PSW II as my first sub. It was fine and I thought "Boy, listen to that bass". I then purchased a Definitive Technology Powerfield 15 sub. After hooking it up and playing the opening of ID4, I had to pry my cat off the ceiling. I'm sure there's bigger and better out there, but I LOVE this sub.

I have a JBL PB-10, its a 10" sub with 150watts power, it does the job for now but I'll probably upgrading in the near future and maybe getting the Atlantic Technology 272 PBM Powered Subwoofer since I'm in the process of completing my speaker set, my mains and center are Atlantic Tech 270's and I'm quite happy with them.
