If the only concern was 60hz vs 120hz, then I would say yes.
However, there's lots of other factors. For example, the older KDL32EX500 doesn't have any internet features. This is something you seemed to be interested in having.
Also, the KDL32EX500 uses CCFL (florescent light) instead of LED for the backlight, which makes it thicker. It's also using an older image processor.
Ideally, you'd want something a little newer, with most or all of the features of the KDL32EX523, but with 120hz. Maybe either last year's KDL32EX710 (Which includes a "24p True Cinema" mode), or this year's KDL32EX720 (240hz and 3D ready). However, I don't know what your price range is.

Keep in mind that since this is your first HDTV, that means that you've been viewing movies all your life on your 60hz SDTVs, with the 3:2 pulldown judder. For the record, aside from the pan in RED (which was probably noticeable because it was such a long shot), I don't normally notice the judder on films myself. That said, the next time I upgrade my TV, I'll probably go with at least 120hz (which may be the standard by then).

actually, the internet thing isn't that big of a deal since i was only going to use it for streaming netflix and since i do that with XBOX already, it wasn't a big deal considering i just realized i don't even have another port on my router for the tv. even wireless would require the other attachment with 523 so no biggie.
when you say "thicker" you mean the tv size? again, i don't really mind that either.

You can't change your order, or cancel and order the other one?
Yeah, the 500 is about 4" deep, or "thick", while the 523 is about 1.7" deep. It's probably not a huge concern for many people, but some like the thinner ones. LED backlights are also considered to be brighter and more even than CCFLs.

So should be here this week and will be able to play with it for spring break next week. Woo hoo.
Thanks again for replies and thanks to you especially Jay!

BTW, adding a switch to your network is probably inexpensive if you are running out of ethernet space.

Technically, that 5 port switch will only add 3 more ethernet ports to your setup; 1 port is used up by the uplink to the router, while another port will be used up by whatever you had previously plugged into the router.

Nothing wrong with watching BDs on a tube...kind of forward thinking to have started buying them if one doesn't have an HDTV.
Now your HDTV will give them new life, so to speak.
Enjoy owning an HD setup! I finally made the jump in 2009 and just love it to death!

I'm guessing that the Xbox 360 Netflix app is probably better than the one built into the TV. However, there's no harm in trying out both.

There, or an electronics store like Best Buy. Best Buy may have a better in-store assortment. Either way, if you buy in a store instead of having it shipped to you, you may end up paying a little more.

If they're both plugged into the network via wires, there shouldn't be a difference in network speed. However, there may be a difference in terms of what features each Netflix app offers. For example, I have Netflix on my Wii in the living room and on my Panasonic Blu-ray in the bedroom. The Wii app has more navigation features, as well as the ability to search for new titles to add to my queue; the Panasonic app only shows my queue. However, the Panasonic can stream titles in HD, while the Wii can only stream in SD.

Only about 60% of US households have a HDTV, so threads like this will probably exist for at least a few more years:

Citing any percentage for DVDTalkers is just pure speculation. However, I don't think we should be uninviting to new HDTV owners just because they're later to the game than many of us.

Technically, I now have zero TVs. Which side am I on?
Any TV programming I watch is on a projector or computer screen at the moment.

Re: Just got my 1st HD TV! i think that is...
so does brand of HDMI cables matter at all? i got $10 ones from Amazon...
also, after i hook up the tv and connect the proper cables, will my tv be ready to go straight from the box or will i have to do some major setup to get screen adjusted and correct for all my HD viewing?

I typically get my cables from Monoprice due to their reputation of high quality and low price:

For example, in regards to the previous 120hz discussion, I'd recommend turning off Motionflow and setting Cinemotion to Auto 2. On your Blu-ray player, make sure the output resolution is 1080p, and set for 24p for films, if available.
There's also a firmware update for this TV, so you may want to hook up your TV to your network and make sure it's up-to-date:
http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu...mdl=KDL32EX710
You can also "calibrate" your TV. Some (all?) Pixar Blu-rays include calibration patterns, or you can buy a disc that's specifically for calibration:
