Video resolution question

Phillips DVP 5990 DVD Video Player have been playing .avi movies with no problem for nearly a year. I normally download the movies to my 2g memory stick and play from the front mounted USB port.

Last night I tried playing "Alien Raiders" and was told that it didn't support the resolution. Before anyone jumps on this, yes I checked inside the player for Aliens

The Properties mention 724x302. Are there any settings on the video player I should be aware of?

Many thanks for any help.

Re: Video resolution question

That particular model of DVD player doesn't support much of anything above 720x480 when it's in AVI playback mode. In other words, it doesn't behave well with hi-def stuff. If I recall, it also doesn't like anything over 1 GB in size. It'll play the file, but simply cut out when it hits the 1 GB mark. If you intend on making of habit of playing avi files that you "found", you might want to consider picking up a WD Live or some other media player type box that's more flexible than what you have.

Re: Video resolution question

Thanks for your input, funny how they don't explain this when you buy it.

I just bought my brother-in-law a Philips dvd player for Christmas, a Model DVP 3560 and wonder if you know anything regarding this model. Mentions DivX Ultra Certified (whatever that means) would this model still have the same issues?

Regarding the WD Live, What is it and do you have any suggestions?

.........Dave

Re: Video resolution question

Download a program called auto gk (it's free) and re-encode the video with a resolution your player will support.

Re: Video resolution question

Worked like a charm, ended up using avirecomp dot com/news.php to re-size to 720.
Thanks...

I have a Phillips model DVP5960 with the DIVX option. Works like a charm. I've played files over a GB in size many times. I use it mostly to watch a TV episode I missed.
