Hi all-

I usually lurk in the DVD Bargains forum but just recently, I have come into enough $$$ to buy a fairly decent entry level HT system (I think!).

I am thinking of getting a 27" Wega TV with stand and the JBL NSP1 surround package to go with it. Thanks to this forum, I already have a Toshiba 6109C DVD player, which I picked up via Mobshop/Pointclick for free last year!

I have a budget of about $1,100 and would need to budget for some decent cables and whatever is needed for the speakers.

I have read that the JBL's are not shielded properly, is this a widespread thing? I have also read similar stories about picture troubles with the Wega and how they can give you headaches?! Any comments?

What I need to know is, is this a good starter system? Where is the best and cheapest place to buy the TV/speakers and can I do it within budget?

Any comments on this would be greatly apprecaited.

Thanks,

Fishie.

btw, on a seperate note, I have the 6109C hooked up to a really old hitachi set via a similarly old VHS. However, with this setup, the color seems to go from bright to slightly washed out back to bright again, like a phase (most noticable when I freeze frame). Is this a known problem with the DVD player or just the way I have it set up?

For $1100 this is what you should get. The Wega set is a nice TV, so if you really like it get it... though Panasonic also makes some nice 27" TV's in their SuperFlat line. The Wega is a bit more expensive, but I think the new 27" model has an automatic 16x9 mode for anamorphic DVDs (very nice!). I think the newer one runs around $800 or so, and the older 27" Wega is in the $600 range

For the sound... you didnt say if you needed a receiver or not, but it sounded like you did, so I would recommend the Kenwood HTB-503. It includes a DD 5.1 and DTS receiver, 5 decent for small room speakers, and a powered sub. I have the 502 which was last years model, and this is great for the price and worked very well in my small room. Also, the receiver by iteself is fairly decent, so late on you can upgrade to larger speakers. You can find the 503 for between $400 and $500 online, but I will need to look for some sites. In this pricerange, the 503 is what I've seen reccomended the most.

I need to go to work now, but there is a place that is selling 12 guage speaker wire in 40 foot sections for $2.50 each, which is a very good price for the only speaker wire you'll need. Also, you'd need a 75 ohm coaxial video cable with rca ends to connect the DVD player to the receiver. You can get these for under $10 at Radio Shack.

Good luck, you're gonna love your new HT

actually for the prices on the wegas it's reversed, the first generations are $800 and the newer ones can range from $550-650.
