Seeing as I've gotten onto the Dolby Digital bandwagon I'm pondering whether I should add a sub-woofer to my setup. I've heard there's a dramatic improvement but since I live in an apartment I know none of my neighbors are going to be impressed. Will it radiate to my downstairs neighbor?


If you don't think it'll be too bad any suggestions on a good inexpensive model? I mean cheap (about $100?)

Yes it will help dramatically for DD. Yes it will radiate everywhere and piss off your neighbors. Just turn it down or off for late night viewing. You could also try some of the bass shakers that shake you chair instead of the whole apartment.

I'm sure that even if 20 more people responded, they'd all same the same thing.

I will go against the grain and say that any sub you can get for $100 (i.e., with a retail below $200) will make your system sound worse.

Save your money, and look at models in the $250 to $300 (street) range.

Unless you like boomy, one-note, bloated, distorted bass.

I agree with stevevt on this one. You're much better off buying a higher quality sub. I have the smallest Velodyne (CT-80, ~$300) in my apartment. Plenty of punch in a small-medium room, but it can be quiet enough to not get you evicted .

In terms of the sound quality improvement, it's really dramatic. When I first hooked it up, it was like night and day. I've never heard movies sound (and feel ) so good before.

I used to live in apartment too. First year was very peaceful with neighbors. I bought a sub in second year and got cops thrice in my house. They refused to tell me who called them. All they said was they got lot of phone calls. I still think that I never used to play it 'All That' loud. Now I have moved to a townhouse and had no complaint so far.

I have some questions.

Who gets bothered most ? People who are living on top of you or below you or on the sides ?

Do you guys know of anything which would give me good effect but wouldn't shake my neighbor's house ?

It always seemed to me that the people above are bothered more than people below. I used to live on the middle floor of a three floor building and I could always hear sound from the rooms below. Then I moved into the third floor and I could still hear things below me. But the guy below me could never hear my stuff. Wierd. And you almost always hear things from the sides because walls aren't as thick as floors.

you may get lucky with a BassCube 8 or 10 on fleabay from hifi.com for around 150 & S&H.They auction "refurbished" equipment from Cambridge Soundworks and their subs are OK. Do a search for "BassCube" in subwoofers for prices.

He he he ... It will definately piss off the neighbors. I'll give you an idea of how loud they'll get. When I was in college I had a buddy who competed in car stereo shows and we built dual 12" ProCast Crunch 8 ohm subwoofers for my reciever(old 100watt JVC) and that thing rocked. We cranked it up once and the 1" plate glass for our dorm room was pulsating and people outside about 50 yds. away were looking around trying to figure out where the vibration was coming from. That was cool. Good luck

Against my better judgment, I will shortly have two Mission 700AS (US$325 each shipped) subs in my apartment. Tom Nousaine of Sound and Vision recently measured the 700AS at 102dB at 25Hz LFE and averaged 108.1dB between 25 and 62Hz at 10% distortion (2 metres) With two identical subs, I should be able to get another 6dB of headroom, corner loaded of course.

Seriously, I am think that you just have to be considerate when using your HT. Even with two subs, I will probably only be running my system at 80dB+ range or so.

Gotta have bass in a HT system.

If you don't have a sub, you don't have DD.
I have a Yamaha YST-SW160 which I got for under $200 when my brother worked at BB. A sub is a must!! I also think you won't get anything good for $100. save!

I'm having the same "to sub or not to sub" debate as Ian11. The only difference for me is that my mains already have 18" woofers, and I've got 4 bass shakers on the way as well. Could a seperate subwoofer add much impact to this already beefy system?
