am reception sucks

so how do i go about getting good am reception, all the good sports talk stations are on am, an with football season here i only listen on the way to and from work.
i have a sony str-de835 it came with that loop am antenna but i get a lot of noise from it, no matter where i put it.
any suggestions thanks.
