i thought THX was a certification thing, where a receiver met certain requirements...but does it actually improve upon the sound?
for example, would a THX-certified receiver sound better in DD5.1 or DTS than a non-THX one?

The only assumption that it might be safe to make is that a THX certified receiver should sound better than one that is submitted to THX and doesn't receive certification.
This says nothing about components that are not submitted to THX for certification.

It really depends on which receiver it is. Assuming both units had similar quality amps (there are many amps that could easily be certified for thx but aren't to avoid having to pay royalties to thx) there are some diffrences in processing.
THX adds special processing such as RE-eq, decorrelation and timbre matching. In Pro-Logic these helped to create a more theater like experience. In DD and DTS it's not really as important anymore.
RE-eq is pretty good at rolling off highs on a bright soundtrack, and timbre matching helps the rear speakers sound closer to the fronts (assuming they have similar drivers).
While these are useful, you can often find these features in non THX certified products. Even if your receiver has them, some movies don't really impove with the extra processing.

Nah!
By buying into a THX system, you're jus lining the pockets of George Lucas without getting much more for your hard earned money.
There's plenty of gear out there that will perform on par or better than THX-certified gear. In the Pro-Logic days, yes, THX made a difference, but that was then, but now, discrete multi-channel sound is here to stay - THX or not!
