Just got a new system, help/advice please!

Ok, just got a new tv with multiple hdmi inputs. I am using my PS3 as a blu ray player. I want to hook up the ps3, xbox, and cable box to the tv using the hdmi connections and then sound out to the receiver using digital coaxial.

Its an older 5.1 receiver, so no hdmi on it. I am getting sound, but its not coming out in 5.1, its using only the front speakers. What could I be doing wrong? Help, please.

You'll have to feed the audio from each component directly into the reciever via optical or coaxial. TV's typically don't pass through 5.1 audio from an HDMI connection, just 2.0.

I have a Sony BD player (not a PS3), and there is a setup option to send the sound to a receiver via coax or optical and to ask for it to be sent at 5.1

What does your receiver show? (Most show what they are getting). What does your PS3 config say? do you get 5.1 sound on PS3 games?

Eddie W is correct - I have an older Yamaha receiver in my family room that's set up the same way. I have two devices that are run into the TV via HDMI (video only) and their audio signals are run into the Yamaha via optical cables.

Well, crap. Thanks for the quick help. Kind of defeats the purpose of having as few cables as possible, but it answers my question.

Just have to hook back the optical cables from each individual unit.

Just looked though and the 360 doesn't have an optical out. So how would you get the 5.1?

Have to go back to using vga or component?

I think with the 360 you have to do component. The optical out is on the component connection fitting - not on the 360 unit.

I've seen tutorials on connecting the Xbox component adapter to get digital 5.1 and then filing down an HDMI cable to fit while that same adapter is plugged in. By default I do not believe the HDMI cable will fit.
