DVD Upconvert ?!??!?!
Are there any DVD upconverters that will upconvert 4:3 material correctly !??!?!
my TV (Olevia 337H) does not have any setting that will help out.
My LG RC797T upconverts fine, except that it stretches all 4:3 TV shows.
I see that Oppo is out of the DVD player market altogether.
Who else makes an upconverting DVD player with an adjustment for 4:3 ?????

Your HD set will only "stretch" material at 720p, 1080i, or 1080p, so if you want to watch 4:3 native content or non-anamorphic letterboxed content without stretching, you'll need to watch it in 480p mode.
In 480p, you television should have a "sidebar" option that will let you see the native 4:3 aspect ratio as well as a "zoom" option that allows you to fill the screen horizontally for watching non-anamorphic letterboxed material.

the Olevia 337H does not have these features: I can zoom, but that crops the image
I know the Oppo 980h has a setting on it that will have pillar boxes on 1080p upconverted 4:3 TV shows; I am wondering what other upconverters have this feature.
any of the old Toshiba HD-DVD players? I've seen a few on eBay for dirt cheap: how are those for upconverting ????

You say "I see that Oppo is out of the DVD player market altogether.". WHAT?? They are in the process of introducing a Blu player at this time. Their site is still there and they are still selling DVD players. What exactly are you referring to?

Oppo isn't going to be making any more DVD-only players, only Blu-Ray (which of course can also play DVDs).

I have an upconverting Samsung that can pillarbox 4:3. It starts every DVD stretched, but pressing the "EZ View" button switches between different viewing modes, one of which is "Vertical Mode" which pillarboxes. I can also zoom in on old non-anamorphic letterboxed images using one of the EZ View options.

I have the same problem with upconverting. When I put in a DVD that is 4.3 it displays the image correctly but it cuts off the top and bottom of the image and my TV completely looses the setting to adjust it to 4.3. I have to plug the DVD player in using the three colour cable to view the entire image correctly in 4.3 at which point my TV regains the option to adjust to 4.3.
I'd also just like to say that I have been really impressed by upconverting on my 40" TV. Reviews that I read on the internet left me feeling just so so about what it would do but all my DVDs look wonderful with it.
