What's your budget? If you need S-video switching, you can cross the Onkyo off the list. I would go with the Sony DB930 if you could afford it. I don't recommend the Sony DE-xxx line, only the DB-xxx and ES-xxx line.

So, if you don't need s-video switching, then the Onkyo is a good choice.

From my personal experience with the Sony ES line I would recommend Onyko. The Sony I tried took too long to decide if the track was DD or DTS and sometimes it would lock up if you paused and unpaused the DVD. It had hissing in the surrounds and the absolute worst remote every put on earth. I have the Onyko 676 and it is a sweet receiver, but the 575 is also nice. The Onkyo has no delay when playing DD or DTS tracks and great sound. If you need S-video switching, however, the 575 does not offer it.

I love my Sony DE-835. Lots of people have complained about it getting to hot, but I haven't had any problems. Of course mine has plenty of room for the vents and isn't behind glass. Even so I'm sure you'd be better off with the more expensive DB or ES line if you can afford it.

Morrow, also, go to www.audioreview.com and read up on the receivers you are considering buying. There's some junk reviews, but usually a general consensus emerges from the bulk of the reviews.

since purchasing my Onkyo 575 a year ago, i have been nothing but impressed. I also did not need S-video connections so opted for the Onkyo and have never regretted it.

If you are thinking about S-Video in the future, you may want to check some Onkyo dealers about a new version of the 575 that I heard about. It is speculated to have S-Video. Does anyone have an update or more info on an updated version of the 575?

Definitely go with the Onkyo!
Onkyo offers the goods where it counts. Quality components, heavy duty construction, and excellent sound.
Many Sony receivers (save the ES line) tend to have very noisy output stages which traslates into noise and distortion from the speakers. The components used in their construction are second rate at best and may account for many of the HEAT problems associated with them. I don't need to tell you that heat is bad for electronics. At any rate, the "quality" and "performance" of a receiver should take precedence over frivolous features (i.e. DSP soundfields, lots of knobs and/or buttons, lcd remotes, etc.)

I know it sounds like I'm Sony bashing and I do realize that they produce some great products (video & laser technology being their strongest). Many people are very happy with their Sony receivers and that's fine. I just think that there are better choices out there, Onkyo being one of them.

I looked at the Onkyo 575 as well as the comprable Sony's and in the end went with the Yamaha 575a as I have heard it is one of the best receivers in the sub $500 price plus I got a good deal on it as it has just been discontinued and I bought an open box ($270). From what I can tell it is overall much better then it's new replacement the Yamaha 596 which retails for $499. It is rated at 70Ws but this is supposedly an underestimation of its range. It also has S-video switching which is a nice feature. I think Yamaha and Onkyo represent the best value under $500.

Another vote for the Onkyo 575. Picked one up last February. Almost chose the Sony DB 830, but went with the Onkyo because of past experiance with their intergrated amps. Either one would make a good set up.

Also, if you go with the Onkyo, you should use a sub/satellite speaker system. Or at the very least, a subwoofer for bass freq.
70 watts/ch. from the Onkyo trying to push large, full range speakers puts a strain on the entire system.

I have the STR - DE925 and it gets hot as a mofo. It's always fading in and out when I have the music up during parties.

I actually melted my old STR - DE615. Then got it fixed under warrantee, sold it to a friend and he melted it 6 months later.

My experience with sonys is that they can't run cool worth a flying sh!t.

www.onecall.com was selling refurbished Onkyo 575's for $299. I think you might have to call them up to get that price.
