What exactly is 6.1 THX (it's on the main page)? I've only known THX to be a form of certification for DVD's, home theater systems, and movie theaters. Do they have their own 6.1 processors now to complete with DD, DTS, and SDDS??

Thanks.

Dolby and THX have a new standard that is called THX-EX it is not 6.1.

6.1 was started by Yamaha as the same as EX with out paying royalty to THX.

It is the same matrix technique that was used to make pro logic center. The difference it is for the rear. TPM and TSWSM were the first movies with and EX track

bfrank, so another way to describe it would be 5.1.1? 5 descrete channels (LR, RR, FC, LR, RR) 1 LFE channel and 1 RC (not a discrete channel, muxed from LR and RR)

It is not 6 discrete channels and a LFE channel.

No it is 6 discrete channels and the matrixed 7th (rear center). The LEF channel is discrete.

OK, so the sub is discrete yet the rear center is not? Why would the center channel be discrete and not the rear center if the concept of how they are derived is the same? Is it because there is not really anything that is recorded in 6.1 yet? So without a recorded rear center, it would not be discrete? Sorry about all these q's. Just trying to understand it all.

Also, I've used a prologic system ran through the rear speakers on a 5.1 receiver to add a rear center. Is this similar to what 6.1 is doing? In fact, we've taken a Yamaha 7.1 and turned it into a 9.1. That was weird. Took a few prologic receivers to split the side and rear channels though.

Another Q, so THX is just giving their certification to Dolby for the 6.1EX? But it's not actually a THX processor or competeing format?

Thanks again.

In 5.1 DD there are no derived channels, they are each a discrete channel. the THX_EX is a standard (?) that allows the RR and the LR to be muxed to create a RC.

What I said above was true except i should have said 1 discrete LFE channel...

I am kind of surprised that THX-EX would not define 7 discrete channels (LF, RF, FC, LR, RR, RC, LFE), but I guess they did not.

Thats it!

I have taken a EX system and played the TEX (the thx logo and the robot) trailer, which is recoreded in EX, and played with and without EX. THe difference is very small but the is a difference as things pan across the rear. This is more so in a big room.
