Blu-ray player question

I'm looking to get a bluray player, but I have a problem. My HDTV's HDMI port doesnt work very well, and it is not under any warranty. Other than that the tv works perfectly. My question is does anyone know if any of the ps3, bdp-s350, or bdp-s550 bluray players upconvert regular DVDs with componant cables?

I just saw that this got moved, sorry for putting it in the wrong place.

Re: Blu-ray player question

I'm not really a tech guy and someone will have a better answer but I seem to remember reading you need the HDMI.

Instead of an expensive player through components, get a less expensive player and get the HDMI fixed.

Re: Blu-ray player question

Yeah, you need HDMI for upconversion of standard DVDs, although the Blu-ray Discs will play fine, and in high definition, over component.

What do you mean the HDMI port "doesn't work very well"?

Re: Blu-ray player question

Sometimes the sound cuts out and the whole screen gets a pink tint. This has happened with several HDMI devices and only on this tv,I'll probably just go ahead and get the tv fixed so I can upconvert with one of these players. Thanks for the help.

Re: Blu-ray player question

I think Oppo makes an upconverting DVD player that upconverts over Component. If that is true, their upcoming Blu-ray player MAY upconvert over component as well.

I would look into that.

Re: Blu-ray player question

I now it seems obvious, but do you have more than 1 HDMI port on your TV? If that is the case, you may want to consider getting a switch box to connect all of your other HDMI cables to and then just run one from the switch box to the TV.

Re: Blu-ray player question

I only have one HDMI port. I got a cheaper HDTV because I'm in high school and it was all I could afford. It actually is a nice tv with a pretty good picture, but it only has 1 of each type of connection port, otherwise I would just get a splitter boxand be done with it.

If I remember correctly, it upconverts over component, only those dvds with no copy protection. It's also only one of their models that does it.

Have you looked for any firmware updates for the TV? Might help the HDMI issue.
