So I had an otter thread about my xmas party but figured I would ask the 'tech' question here.. Basically I won a Sony Bravia 40" TV (40w4100) at my xmas party. Currently I have a Toshiba 51" HD rear projection TV that is 2 years old. I can;t decide which to keep. If I keep the LCD TV, I lose 11" of screen. Would the picture be a lot better on the Sony for 'regular' tv?

I voted 40". Not a fan of the RPTV myself.

I don't like RPTVs.....I'd try and sell it if you don't have room.

Probably a degradation, actually. If PQ is an important factor to you, compare them. But you should calibrate them first, neither will look their best with default settings.

Is your RPTV DLP, LCD, or CRT? Not sure how everyone can answer this question without knowing, though I guess it's possible that it's common knowledge that Toshiba only makes one of these types. I'd assume it'd be LCD, but that's just a semi-educated guess.

I recommend blocking off 40 inches' worth of real estate on your current TV and see what you think about the size difference.

Size does matter. Unless your RPTV stinks, I say keep it.

51" = 1112.5 sq in.

40" = 684.04 sq in.

So your 40" is 62% larger than the 40"


Do you really think you would be okay with that?

Sell both and buy a 50" plasma or put the 40" in another room for games or what not.

Keep both!!! I have a 53" Pioneer Elite RPTV. I have it professionally ISF Calibrated and haven't found anything that looks better. Now the LCD's might be brighter but for pure PQ, skin tones, color and film like quality it can't be beat.

It;'s a toshiba 51h84. I believe it is a CRT. Currently I have a 27" old school tv in my bedroom. Obviously the 40" would be a huge upgrade, but seems like overkill..

Selling both for a 50" plasma is an interesting idea. The 40" sells for $1600 at BestBuy (although I don;t have a receipt). Looks like my current TV goes for $400-$500

i would sell them both and buy yourself a 50" 1080p Panasonic plasma for around $1450.

You could probably get $1200 on craigslist for the LCD and $3-400 for the monstrocity.

Well the Toshiba is a CRT RPTV. I would just put the 40" in the room thats what I have in my room.

Also, as an FYI. I also won a Sony Blu-Ray player and Sony Bravia Home Theater System.

I'll probably sell the Blu-Ray player since I already have a ps3. Also I have a new Onkyo receiver so not sure the HTS would be an upgrade and also it seems like overkill for the bedroom

Plasma is older and the market has this misconception that it is therefore a lesser tech. So, lower prices.

Best Buy and Sony both have prices higher than what a smart consumer pays. With some searching you can find a good deal on a 50" Panny plasma. Just don't get it at Best Buy.

Your Toshiba gets hit or miss reviews. I would try and sell both if you can and get the plasma. If you can't sell them both than just put the LCD in your bedroom.

Which Sony player did you get?

That will depend on scalers, source of the regular TV signal, calibration, etc. In my family we've had a 40" Sony LCD and a 40" Panny plasma bought in the last year. Both 1080. The plasma is clearly better looking, and I didn't even calibrate it, but I did do the Sony. (which helped it immensely)

Overall, the plasma recommended by SoSpacey would probably be a pic upgrade from both of your sets. So that should apply to both SD & HD.
