Which receivers downgrade video?

Hi guys, I'm searching for a new receiver with HDMI inputs. I've been doing some research and have read that certain receivers that allegedly "upscale" non-HD video to near HD quality will actually end up downgrading 1080i and/or 1080p video to 720p if you already have a 1080p tv. For example, I recently read that the Onkyo 705 might do this.

Can anyone tell me which receivers do this and if there is anyway to avoid this if you do buy such a receiver? I am planning to hook my HD cable box (Magnavox box from Comcast) and my PS3 up to my new receiver via the HDMI inputs. I'm then planning to hook the receiver via the HDMI output up to my 1080p plasma. Will this result in a possible downgrade of 1080p and 1080i video from my cable box and/or PS3?

I want to buy a receiver for lossless audio, but I won't do this at the expense of the video quality I get on my tv. Any help you guys can give would be greatly appreciated!

I would guess that none would do this in new generations of receivers, say, that came out in 2008. Unless you set them to output only 720p, which would be silly with a 1080p TV. Where did you read this? If this is true, that might be the place to ask more about it.

Jersey314 not sure where you read that but my Denon3808 will upconvert everything to 1080P or if I wish(which I do) let it just pass-thru the signal and let the display(or up convert) the picture.
I don't know what your looking to spend so can't suggest anything.

Onkyo 876 at newegg for $900 or so, that's an insane deal. My 876 will passthrough, or go by source meaning whatever you set it on is based on what you select per input. you can also cut them off per output(it has 2 hdmi outs) whatever res you want bascially all across the board.

And then even has ISF calibrated settings as well. So many damn options on this thing I'm still going through stuff.
