Need help choosing new DVD player

Hi Guys,
The kids have wrecked my old sony and I need to buy a new DVD player. I'm hoping someone here can recommend a good model and where to buy it considering my needs:
1. Needs to have a high tolerance for scratched DVD's...My kids are brutal on them and I know some are better at reading scratched DVD's than others
2. Need to be able to play burned DVD's
3. Needs to play multi-region dvd's...(not super important, but a nice feature)
4. Durability
Any help is appreciated...

I love my Philips 5992 from Costco ($50). The USB port is a nice bonus, it upconverts nicely, I've watched many burned DVDs on it, and I believe it can be modified to be region free.

Usually PCs are the only ones truly better at overcoming scratches. Anecdotal evidence on some particular players may or may not be helpful. One person's scratch is not the same as the next guy's.

Just as a follow up...I went to costco yesterday and they had the Philips 5992 for $40 ($10 instant rebate). I actually picked up 3 (other 2 for Xmas presents). I was able to play a DVD that my kids had scratched and not been able to watch on the old player, it played flawlessly on the 5992. It was also easy to unlock the multiregion feature...thanks to snowmaker for the recommendation.

By far the best player for your needs is the Oppo 981...althought not very popular, they are the best multi-region players around

You guys may have convinced me to get one too. I was looking up the specs and I just wanted to be sure: this player does convert PAL DVDs to NTSC doesn't it?

1st choice --Oppo,I have the older model 971(I think)that I will always keep.
But go far 980 or 981 model around $170 from Amazon

2nd choice,if you want to spend under $100

Sony (around $75)
HDMI Output
1080p Upscaling Video Output

Their not popular because the general public hasn't heard of them nor care it's one of the best SD player around. I've had the 971 since it came out and it still works flawlessly. I passed on the 981 but I am going to get ther BD player when it is released.
